Pattern: Fabulous Five Yard Quilts - Fun, Fast, & Finished by Pineapple Press. I altered the pattern slightly to fit a twin bed, then redesigned it as described below.
Fabric: CARS: "Vintage Cars" designed for Exclusively Quilters, Fish: "Off the Hook" the works by Dan Morris for RJR Fabrics. (Motorcycle fabric - couldn't get enough info from the selvedge I saved. :( (all car/cycle fabs ordered from fabric.com)
backing: the dreaded sheets (I'm using a blue from Wal-mart - 200 thread count)
Binding: backing brought around to front
Quilting: will be done by a friend on her Gracie - meander

My 4 year-old grandson shares bunk beds with his half-brother who is 7. Their mom asked me to make them quilts for Christmas. I had to alter the pattern, but it was already the right width so I just added two more 10 inch strips to make it long enough. The pattern calls for 5 10-inch strips to be down the center of the quilt. I've done this with other large scale prints before, but when I did these and lay them on a twin bed it was the ugliest thing you've ever seen - just big old strips of fabric - with the reds popping out all over. SOOO. ... instead of the 5 inch blocks being the borders - two blocks wide - I sewed them 4 blocks wide. Added them to the long edge of the quilt - brought the other edge over and sewed it as a long tube, then folded it in half longways centering the 4 block rows at the fold - and cut the long edge through those wide strips. This made the long strips now on the sides instead of the center and voila! I liked it! I added the 3 inch strips of beige fabric to make a separation between the original borders and the wide strips so now the quilt doesn't really have borders, but I think the binding will finish it off.

(This is my first attempt to put pics on a thread in the new format. Wish me luck!)
