Stopped at a garage sale yesterday and look what I brought home. It was only $4....I couldn't believe it! As I picked it up, I asked if anybody there knew a story behind that quilt. A gal ....probably mid 50's to 60 spoke up and said that was made by her grandmother on her "pedal" Singer machine. She also added that there was no stuffing in it because it was made as a summer quilt. Of course, I was already buying it...but the story to go with it made it even more fun to get. There is not even 1 hole in it and was kept nicely because it isn't very yellowed either. I think it was saved more than used. Anyways, I am very happy to be the new owner of this lovely piece.

 Nice quilt  Makes you wonder why the family never used it , or kept it

HeatherQuilts 06-12-2010 06:45 AM

Nice find!!

Quilt4u 06-12-2010 06:46 AM

Wow!!!! Great find.

cjomomma 06-12-2010 06:47 AM

The sad part is that these families are not keeping these quilts. It is a beautiful quilt.

CAROLJ 06-12-2010 06:54 AM

I can't understand how someone can get rid or a beautiful quilt their grandmother made. Great buy on your quilt,

I saw a Dresden plate top at a garage sale yesterday but it was so stained and they wanted way to much for it. They also had so packages of blocks probably from the early 1900's as the fabric was very thin and course. They had high prices on them so I passed. I didn't have much money.

Candace 06-12-2010 08:14 AM

I would never part with anything my grandmother made for $4. Sad that people just don't care about hand made things anymore:< Glad you're giving it a new home! Is it quilted?

MaryStoaks 06-12-2010 08:19 AM

That's a beauty! Great find, enjoy!

oldswimmer 06-12-2010 08:23 AM

Beautiful quilt... I love the colors.. like a raspberry/ornge sorbet! Congrats on you great find.

on another note... I HAVE to start going to garage sales again... LOL!

no1jan 06-12-2010 08:31 AM

It is a treasure. Can you imagine someone sitting there making it only to have it sold at a garage sale for $4.00.

At least it went to someone who understands it true value!

Congratulations, on your find. I know you'll use it as it was meant to be!

Their loss, your big find!

ann clare 06-12-2010 08:35 AM

When she finds out how much it would have been worth, she will be an unhappy camper! To bad...it's yours now! Great find!

Pam 06-12-2010 11:38 AM

Went yard saleing today and did not buy anything, not even a soda. You did great though.

Eddie 06-12-2010 11:40 AM

I just fall out of my chair when I read stories like this. Why in the world families sell off heirlooms like this for pennies is beyond me. Glad you (who will appreciate it) were there to give it a loving home.

I just had a thought....maybe the grandmother was really, really MEAN  and this was their way of settling the score.

trueimage 06-12-2010 03:14 PM

I can't believe they sold it...but so happy it has a new loving home!

Luv Quilts and Cats 06-12-2010 03:15 PM

Very nice! Too bad the family did not cherish it more, but it's their loss and your gain!

mamaw 06-12-2010 04:38 PM

That's ok Eddie, if they settled the score...it gave me a wonderful opportunity to own something special. I will treasure her quilt, no matter how mean and ugly she could have been LOL.

Pineapple Princess 06-12-2010 04:44 PM

Everytime I go to a yardsale and find an old quilt, they want too much money for them. They know what they have. I'm sew happy for you to have such a beautiful quilt that will get the love and respect these treasures deserve. Lucky you!!

Awesome, glad you got it. Wonder why no one in the family would want it? What a treasure for you!

wvdek 06-12-2010 10:22 PM

I'm glad it has a new home that appreciates it.

Reminds me of Sherbert ice cream.

sherrill 06-13-2010 02:28 PM

We cherished our quilts, that Grammie made. They were used to death though. I don't know of any that remain. To my knowledge they were all crazy patchwork, usually with red centers,if the red meant anything I don't know what it was.

rootyr 06-13-2010 03:00 PM

I am so glad someone has found this quilt and realized its beauty!

sss 06-13-2010 03:31 PM

tmg 06-14-2010 02:33 AM

Very nice find.

LovingIzabella 06-14-2010 02:36 AM

Absolutely beautiful find. Sad that people can part with handmade things for mere pennies :-( But the quilt is lucky-it has someone who will appreciate it and know it's true value. Congrats to you on a great find and a good save so it did not end up as someone's garage floor under the car work blanket!
Hugs
April
