This is my first Schnibble small quilt. The pattern is from Carrie Nelson's book Schnibbles Times Two. I love the Civil War era prints and colors. It's about 29 inches square. Bought backing and binding today. I think it will be a wallhanging in my newly re-painted sewing room...as soon as it gets newly re-painted. Thanks for looking.

I forgot to say that I used two charm packs of fabric from the same designer. The one that looks like a stripe is actually a print of teeny tiny flying geese.

Gosh I may have to change my mind about Civil War prints. I have not been a fan, but I REALLY like this quilt.

What I like about the book is that she shows the same pattern made from both "layer cakes" and "charm packs." I want to try the same one in the bigger size, maybe with 1930's prints. I love bowtie blocks.

Why is it called "schnibbles"? It looks like pretty direct snowballed bow-ties to me?

It's lovely though!!

That's the name that the designer, Carrie Nelson, uses for her small quilt patterns. I think it means "little bits" or something like that. The patterns are sold individually but I got this from one of her books....and it is just a snowball/bowtie in a small scale.

Went online and found this.

Schnibble: noun A scrap of fabric; a leftover bit of cloth; a small piece. The word has a German origin and is found primarily in German settlements in the Midwest.

From the Dictionary of American Regional English published by the Harvard University Press.

I have the Schnibbles book too, and love it. Not only shows you big quilts, but also has little quilt to make as well. Bowtie's are my all-time favorite block. thanks for sharing, wonderful work.

Yeah, I knew that, but, to me, even though this is a small quilt, the pieces don't seem like a "scrap", or a "leftover bit".

Seems to me that there used to be a book, or maybe a technique where tiny pieces of fabric -- little fiingernail size -- were used to make mosaic-like, torn-piece fabric "paintings" where the pieces were fused and/or thread painted down. Anybody else remember what I'm talking about?

By the definition here, it appears *any* miniture quilt could be called a schnibble.

Not trying to argue, just tgrying to understand and learn.

That said.
The bow tie snowball quilt is lovely and would be a great addition in any home. Love the Civil war fabric.
