Ever done something like this - while quilting I left the machine for a minute & when I came back, sat down not noticing the edge of the quilt was on the chair.
The quilt was under the needle & there was a horrible ripping sound.
1" tear in middle of block! Nearly cried!
I plan to fmq butterflies in the red HSTs - so after a carefully hand darned repair appliqued a butterfly over it. The tear on the back will have the label over it as it's the edge block. I was lucky it wasn't a bigger rip!

thimblebug6000 03-05-2009 08:05 AM

Well you did a great job at averting that disaster. Your quilt and quilting are lovely.

Mplsgirl 03-05-2009 08:11 AM

Good recovery!!! How did that happen?

Katrine 03-05-2009 08:20 AM

I sat on the edge of the quilt & it pulled away from the needle which was down ... that'll teach me to be more careful, as the repair has taken all afternoon.

CRH 03-05-2009 08:20 AM

You turned a near disaster into an "embellishment opportunity"! :D :D

Love your quilt and the quilting you did!! Did you quilt with long arm or domestic machine??

Katrine 03-05-2009 08:23 AM

thanks CRH, my first go fmq on a lap size. I have a Janome MC6600.

beachlady 03-05-2009 08:24 AM

Great cover-up though. Good thinking.

Bevanger 03-05-2009 08:30 AM

Well , it looks like it was covered great... It sure must've been scary tho. Great quilt

Knot Sew 03-05-2009 08:32 AM

It could have been worse, your machine could have toppled  it looks great

tuesy 03-05-2009 08:33 AM

I'm so sorry that it happened, but you saved it beautifully! Your quilt is gorgeous!!

reneebobby 03-05-2009 08:41 AM

Sorry to hear that, I have something simuliar i wash my flannel quilt after quilting and one block the seams SPLIT open now i have to try and fix. errrrrrrrrrrrrrr it is a gift. OUCH.

pocoellie 03-05-2009 08:44 AM

I'm glad you were able to "fix" it. It's a very pretty quilt and you did a great job on the quilting and the "repair"

Katrine 03-05-2009 08:54 AM

Bev - it was the pits of the tummy feeling!

Ruth, yes, lucky, cos the needle snapped in half too.

Renee - has the seam stitching come undone, or fabric split? You should be okay if it's the seam. If it's a fabric tearaway from the stitching, could you lightly catch it together and embroider something fancy over the top & make a feature?

RedGarnet222 03-05-2009 09:47 AM

Great thinking Katrine! Very pretty quilt I might add.

dreamer2009 03-05-2009 12:12 PM

So happy that you

Too many things to keep track of! :?

Butterflyspain 03-05-2009 12:44 PM

Katrine looks like that turned into a happy accident because you have made a great job of the tear.

I can just imagine how you felt after all that work.

Lovely quilt though.

Feathers 03-05-2009 01:39 PM

Katrine: Your quilt is beautiful and your patchwork on the tear is a stoke of genious. Good job.

littlehud 03-05-2009 03:43 PM

Never had that happen, but it could in my house. My heart dropped as I read it but you did a wonderful save.

Marcia 03-05-2009 06:27 PM

Katrine--I was reading about your tear and looking at your quilt and could not find it anywhere. Then I realized that you made the applique to cover it up--great save! I thought it was just a part of your original quilt plan. What a way to change a negative into a positive!!!

Janstar 03-05-2009 07:55 PM

Great save Katrine! No one but you will ever know. We won't tell. Lovely quilting by the way.

gcathie 03-05-2009 08:00 PM

How clever of you to come up with a soultion so fast....I'd still be scatching my head....and saying a few choice words......:-)

Katrine 03-05-2009 10:06 PM

oh believe me, gcathie, the choice words were said!
But now I'm happy, it looks like a had a "good idea". Will post the finished quilt, when done.

SulaBug 03-05-2009 11:28 PM

You did a great job fixing the tear.
I am anxious to see the finished pictures.
Good luck with the rest of it!!
:D :D :D :D

Shadow Dancer 03-06-2009 03:02 AM

Nice work! :) My stomach flipped when I read what happened....I would have cried.

tlrnhi 03-06-2009 03:24 AM

Great save! And who would have known if you didn't say anything?

Katrine 03-06-2009 03:27 AM

I'm not telling anyone else, apart from the Board!!

Chele 03-06-2009 03:29 AM

The butterfly is the perfect addition! An artistic save! I can't wait to see the whole quilt. Your FMQ is looking fab.

Mousie 03-06-2009 06:39 AM

yeah, i was almost re-living it with you, as i was reading. I will definitely be careful of this. We work so hard and then in an instant, some little thing...and then you slaved away and look how beautiful. What a relief. So glad you shared with us. Such a pretty quilt. :D

sandpat 03-06-2009 06:44 AM

Great save!!! I mean what a nice design opportunity you had
Seriously...my heart would have dropped to my feet..it did when I was reading what happened to you. Can't wait to see the whole quilt when you are finished..it looks really great!

Celeste 03-06-2009 09:22 PM

What a beautiful way to save a boo-boo!

Darlene 03-07-2009 05:48 AM

Sorry that happened to your pretty quilt but it sounds like you fixed it up. No one will ever know.

Alaskan lady 03-07-2009 05:57 AM

Looking forward to seeing your quilt finished and posted. Happy dance on a great save!

Katrine 03-07-2009 10:07 AM

I'm nearly there - just borders to quilt, and binding to go on ..

k3n 03-08-2009 07:19 AM

OMG - what a thing to happen but as usual you had a bright idea to fix it!

I've seen this Top in the flesh guys and it's even more beautiful than the pics show!

The quilt is now finished (apart from a label to cover the small hole on the back!).
It was hard getting photos of the fmq. I didn't use too much of contrasting thread as its my first quilt with fmq. There are some wobbles and variations in stitch lengths, but I know there are no police here!
Hope you like it.
