Crazy Quilt from antique hankies

3 Attachment(s)
I had this box of old hankies...some belonged to my Grandmother, some to my Mother and others that I had just collected from garage sales etc. I was trying to figure out what to do with them. They were too pretty to be discarded and so I decided to make a quilt from them. That way maybe they wouldn't get tossed out when I am gone. Sure enough.. everyone who sees this quilt wants this quilt ...another problem to solve! One of the hankies was sent to me by a pen pal I had when I was 13 or 14 years old. We lost touch many years ago. I am including a picture of the block that I put that one in. It has her embroidery that says "to Dear Ruth, Mildred". Wouldn't it be wonderful if she should happen to be a member of this board and recognize it!
I really enjoyed making this quilt and quilting it too, even though it took me quite a long time to do it. Hope you all enjoy looking.

Oh my that is beautiful, I have a collection of hankies that I have been wanting to make a quilt out of. My pattern is for one hankie per block sewed down on muslin. The each block is pieced together. I like your so much better what size are your blocks, sashing and boarders ? I would love to make one like this. Great job.

You did a beautiful, beautiful job in making this quilt. What a wonderful way to display these lovely hankies where they can be enjoyed. I just love it!

I cut 11 1/2 inch blocks of muslin, then just cut the hankies and fitted them randomly using ribbon, laces and other trims as well as fancy stitches from my machine. Then I trimmed them down to 10 1/2 inch blocks and used a 3 inch (finished size) sashing .

It is wonderful. How many hankies did you use?

Hi Ruth, my name is Mildred... :D Just kidding. You will probably have to name someone in your will to keep the fighting down. It's a beautiful quilt. I've never seen a "hanky quilt" like this. It's so unique.

cindy4857 06-07-2012 02:40 PM

This pattern is soooooooooo beautiful. I absolutely love what you did with the hankies. This is the BEST hankie quilt I have ever seen/saw. If I was one of your kids I'd be pushing the others out of line for this quilt or secretly asking ya to promise it to me :-). I can't tell how beautiful this quilt is to me. great job. Is there a pattern that you can tell us to look up or did you make it up?

You are very creative; good use and way to preserve those beautiful vintage hankies. When I see a crazy quilt I wonder if there's any pattern to start with or if you creative types just fly by the seat of your pants and see what develops! Always fun to look and look and look at crazy quilts.

sassyg 06-07-2012 03:00 PM

Beautiful vintage look.......love love love.

No pattern, I just cut pieces and fit together, each block is different though many of them have pieces of the same hankies in them. My Great Grandma used to say she made something "by guess and by gosh". Then if it didn't turn out right, she'd say "I guessed it was right but by gosh it wasn't". Luckily these mostly came out OK...or they didn't make it into the quilt!

I been collecting to do a butterfly handie quilt but I think I just changed my plans. Beautiful.... Thanks a big time for sharing. Phannie

Oh my G-d, that is GORGEOUS! Like most on this post, I have hankies too that I have been saving and now I know what I'm doing with them. I'm not much of a purple person, but it fits so well with this quilt, I think I'm going to go out of my comfort zone and be a copy cat. Thanks so much for sharing this.

I'll tell you where the "crazy" part comes in --- I'm CRAZY about this quilt! Oh my goodness! This is just so delicate & feminine & beautiful & I WANT IT! You did a fabulous job & I can see why everybody is fighting over it. If I were in your neck of the woods, I'd be right in the middle of that scrap!

I, too, had a penpal waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day. We lost touch decades ago but I still think about her & wonder how she is. Debi Haas from Oxford, OH, if you're out therem email me!

Oh, thank you! I hadn't heard "by guess & by gosh" in eons! My Mother used to say it, too. Thanks for that memory!

Grandma Peg 06-07-2012 06:44 PM

Your quilt is just beautiful and a great way to use up hankies. Don't know if I have enough to make one cuz I made two sweatshirts using hankies doing the crazy quilt method.
