Diamond Island Tote (challenging for me)

10 Attachment(s)
I completed this tote a couple of days ago. It is the Diamond Island Tote by AuntiesTwo.
It was quite challenging for me, but I really do like it. I used a Kaufman Cherry Balipop for the weaving strips.
It is rather large and I plan to use it for my knitting projects in progress. The hardest part was attaching all the strips to the bottom of the purse. The weaving was fun and the clothes pins worked better than pins in lining up the strips correctly as I could reposition the strips easily. Hope you like it.

That looks like it was a lot of precise work, but it came out great. Good job! Love your fabric and color selection. Great idea to use it for knitting works in progress. Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous!
I can so see this in scraps. The talented ladies here are so good in using their scraps!

quiltingcurious 06-16-2012 05:55 AM

What a neat tutorial, it is darling, love that batik red-violet fern pattern in the top border and bottom, a beautiful mix of batiks.

QuiltE 06-16-2012 06:38 AM

Well Done!
I think that'd be challenging to most everyone ... like fighting with a couple of octopus'! :D

When you say it's large .... how large?

It looks like it'd make a great shopping purse/bag!

red-warrior 06-16-2012 06:53 AM

I absolutely love everything about it!!! Thanks so much for sharing!

dunster 06-16-2012 06:58 AM

Wow, with the first picture I was thinking what a pretty bag it was. With the rest of the pictures I was just amazed at how it was constructed. You are one brave lady for starting out with that pattern, and your bag is gorgeous.

katsewnsew 06-16-2012 07:07 AM

Awesome, cute, adorable, pretty and the list goes on. I absolutely love it! It is beyond my skills. I think I would get dizzy weaving it together--what am I saying, I am dizzy all the time. lol

Thank you for all your wonderful comments.

The dimensions of the tote are: 12"-Height, 14" Wide, 8"-Depth

If using for shopping, I would suggest more substantial handles. I made mine according to the pattern. They are strips with 1/4" cotton cording in them. Each handle is three strips braided together.

I'm really interested to see some more of these posted here on the quilting board.
Have fun!

Indeed it'd be a perfect shopping assistant ... could stash lots of loot as you go from shop-to-shop! Or one that'd be good for toting along WIP when we head to our LQS to find additional fabrics.

Thanks for the tips!
Though, I think it is one pattern that you'd definitely need the pattern!!

Your weaving strips .... are they strips sewn and turned? Or do you have a batting inside of them?

Peggy Jeanne 06-16-2012 01:52 PM

I think it is beautiful, love the handles!

Tweety2911 06-16-2012 02:19 PM

The strips are 2-1/2" by 44". You use one layer of batting (I used warm & natural), fold the strip together lengthwise with rights sides together and batting on top. Then sew one short side and down the full length of the long side and turn. By closing one short end, it is easier to turn. When assembling the strips on the bottom, use the raw edge short end. You will end up cutting off the closed short end when you trim the top.

I love it. The bag itself is very interesting and the fabrics are beautiful.

Thanks!! The more you tell use, the more you are luring me into this ... though it looks almost impossible to get all those legs and arms to cooperate! :D

The pattern lays out the approach to get them all lined up.
Looking forward to seeing your tote.

I am working on this bag at the moment & came here to search and sure enough, great pictures! Just starting to lay my strips onto the bottom shape & couldn't decide if they were supposed to lay straight & if so...then how did I get them sewn on.... THANK YOU so much for your picture!

stitcherlady 08-01-2012 06:22 PM

It might have been challenging for you, but it sure did turn out great. Your success must have felt wonderful - you have such a great bag.
