These blocks were part of a recent blue and white block exchange. I have now made the centre block of a Mariners Compass and when I laid them out on the white bedspread I wondered if it woud be better to stick to white with perhaps a last blue border.

OR do I edge each block in blue and then sew them together

I would be grateful for your suggestions.

Thanks Momo. We did this at our sewing Group here in Spain and i thought it would look good in the middle of these blocks.

it was a design made on EQ6 that our teacher gave us to do and we PP it.

turned out better than I thought.

Maybe a small blue border would set off the center block.,it is absolutely beautiful

mgshaw 08-22-2009 09:08 AM

What else are you planning on doing in the center? I used white sahing between all my outside blocks with some blue around the center blocks. Oh heck, here is the link to my quilt so you can see what I am talking about.

I love your Mariners Compass!! :D

Aren't Mariner's compasses fun? I really enjoyed making them for the WIP I have now. Your's came out beautifully. I am working on a quilt right now that has some of that blue you used in some of the points, or at least it looks like it may be the same :-)

Anyway, you have a lot of options. You can leave it all white which would leave lots of open space for quilting in blue thread. That white space could lend itself to some beautiful feather wreathes or swags or continue on with the star theme and quilt more stars or mariners compass in the area.

Another option is some more piece work in that area done in blue and white. Some rows of flying geese, pinwheels or a really spiky tall sawtooth border on top and bottom and a not so spiky one on the sides.

When I grow up, I wanna be able to do a mariner's compass.....

I think I might outline each block with a blue, but whatever you do, I think it will look extraordinary.

Thanks for the link Melissa, yours is wonderful, you have given me an idea, just high tailing upstairs to the 3rd floor to see if I can do the Mariners compass on point.

You will be surprised how great they go together. No classes in your area, cos thats the best way to learn PP.

Elle: what beautiful blocks, esp the Mariner's Compass. IMHO and believe me very humble, I would leave a white space around the MC block and put a narrow blue border around that now larger block. I would then add the other blocks all around without borders or sashing between them--a mediallion style. Does this make sense? This would emphasize the MC block and leave room for decorative quilting. What ever you choose please post a picture--I'm in love with those blocks in those colors. Thanks for sharing your WIP and good luck.

JanRN, what lovely words you said. these blocks were in a swap I did with other ladies on this board, so they have to take the credit for the blocks. I did the mariners compass and one block.
I love the idea you have said about the narrow blue border around the compass, but I am going to take Melissa´s suggestion and turn it on point.
Then keep it on a white background. Then I will place all of that into a square, then the other stars will go all around it. Hope that makes sense, I knew all of you would come up trumps for me a BIG THANK YOU.

Beautiful! If you are going to have that much white in the middle, I think I'd do a blue frame aroung the center block. It would showcase it better.

Yes, thats what i am going to do, Then put it onto a square or oblong dependant what suites best and put another blue border round that before adding all the stars.

Thanks Elle

Ninnie 08-22-2009 12:07 PM

That is so pretty!!
I would not strip with blue, but would let the white run together, and then use the blue at the end.
Just my thought! LOL

Your center block is amazing. I think you should do something to really set it off. Maybe just frame it in a nice blue.

A special touch? WOOHOO!! I'm excited!

Elle - your compass is amazing. I (like everyone else) am anxious to see how you lay this out and what it'll look like. It's really summery. The blue remind me of the Greek isles :).

joeyoz 08-26-2009 09:26 AM

I would maybe add a 1" blue, then white and then another 1" blue. You could do some really beautiful quilting in the white border in between the 2 blue 1" borders. Your compass is absolutely amazing.

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!

chickadee_42us 08-26-2009 03:45 PM

my 2 cents - I vote blue then a small white. I think a single white border looses the blue balance.

It's gorgeous.

I was going to say this but was toooooo afraid, three borders - YES.

pennyswings 08-26-2009 03:57 PM

I love the white Elle. Gosh the blocks are all so beautiful. I like CajinQuilter's suggestion, use a blue border around the center block. I like the color Mgshaw used in her quilt. I think the darker blue would look great and not detract in any way.
