Looks like a toothbrush without a head, doesn't it. Well, my DH (the inventor) decided if the head was removed and it was sharpened, it would make a stilletto....with a nice gripping surface.

My first thought was that it looked like a homemade weapon in prison. I guess I've watched too many of those prison documentaries on TV. This is a great tool for sewing, though.

I thought about a prison shank too, but I am glad it is a sewing tol.
