I was asked about my avatar, so I decided to post it.
I designed it. I call it The Eagle Flies at Dawn. About 3 years ago, my nephew in law asked me for an eagle quilt. I designed this and started construction. The eagle is hand appliqued, so took a while. Meantime, I heard that his vision was going very quickly, so I used eagle prints and made him a rapid quilt that he could get while he could still see. This quilt will be the center of my display as featured quilter of the year at the county show in August, after which time, it will be available for sale. The method I used for the eagle was to download an eagle picture and 'blow it up' well past the point of being a fuzzy print, printing out segments of a large "poster". As I recall, it was 16 pages in landscape mode, which I taped together. I then cut up the various color sections to use as templates. My quilting included lines to represent the feather veins. It would probably have been easier and much faster to buy a commercial eagle poster to use for my templates. For the sunburst segments, I used Quilt Pro's Mariner's Compass, took 1/4 of a compass and distorted it for my paper pieces pattern. We live in the Trinity Mountains of Northern CA, where we often get a cloud formation called "lenticular" (lens-shaped), which I represented with my own version of delectible mountains.
