Wow just look at all those colors, at least you thought to apperciate it one last time, before the last odds and ends when away. :D

purpl7 08-29-2008 09:54 AM

Bevanger 08-29-2008 10:33 AM

what does everyone do with their "trash" scraps????????
I read somewhere about putting them in a pillowcase for pet beds. I'm donating these to the vet we take the boys too

Chele 08-29-2008 12:48 PM

Gorgeous scrap quilts! I often gaze at my pretty trash too! Aren't we nuts?!!

sewnsewer2 08-29-2008 01:11 PM

PuffinGin 08-29-2008 01:16 PM

My family makes so much fun of me. I waste very little fabric.

First all "scraps" go into a bin beside my cutting table. Periodically I go through and cut it into 2" squares for a scrap quilt.

Then I cut what's left into 1 1/2" SQUARES. That is as small as I go that way.

I have another basket that weird shaped pieces go and those I use for a mini quilt.

Then all of those strips from squaring up your fabric. I wrap clothesline rope with the strips then zigzag around making either a rug or a basket.

I'll attach some pictures of wips.

You can make fun of me too. You will be in good company. You have beautiful trash!!!

If you hang the little pieces on tree branches, the birds can use them for their nests. Love the bow ties.

I love the bow tie quilt. Very pretty. Where did you find the pattern?

jbsstrawberry 08-29-2008 08:23 PM

gcathie 08-29-2008 08:37 PM

Wow I want to take lessons from you........I'd like to make the rug thing.....stunning.....way to go using all you can ....totally fab....

Lucky Patsy's 08-29-2008 08:59 PM

Mary Q C - I have been trying to resist pulling all those strips out of the garbage, but now that I know I could make a rug out of them, I may not be able to!!!! What needle and thread do you use to sew through the rope wrapped with fabric?

quilterpat- I was given the pattern for block of the month at my quilt guild (and was lucky enough to win 17 blocks!), but I believe it came from quilter's cache and is called mini bowtie.

Boston1954 - Great idea, but I would hate to lure the birds to my yard with the two cats I have!

Chele 08-30-2008 07:25 AM

I'd love to know how to make those rugs too!

Janstar 08-30-2008 11:10 AM

You have to do a tut on how to make those rugs. What a brilliant idea! Jan

Lucky Patsy's 08-30-2008 07:53 PM

Yes, yes, a tutorial, please!!!!

mary quite contrary 08-31-2008 01:50 AM

I will work on a tutorial. It is really simple. The hard part is keeping it flat. If it doesn't stay flat, I turn them into a basket. :)

Bevanger 08-31-2008 04:45 AM

cool. i've never tried a rug before.

Janstar 08-31-2008 05:15 PM

That's cool, I like baskets too!

mary quite contrary 09-01-2008 10:10 AM

I made a tutorial. My first one here so if it doesn't make sense please let me know and I will be more specific or answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for asking.

Mary

Diane007 11-04-2013 11:05 AM

wow that is using every thing

Halo 11-04-2013 03:24 PM

I also make hot pads out of the rope wound with 1/2 inch strips along with the baskets. You can make them whatever size you like. I waste nothing. Many of my family & friends also make fun of my keeping all scraps, but they enjoy the fruits of my labor. When I saw your waste basket with all those wonderful strings, I thought, NO don't throw those away.
