Fabric Dyeing~Purple to Pink!

2 Attachment(s)
Well, I had to do it! I've been wanting to do my own fabric dyeing and finally got started at it yesterday. My daughter is here visiting this week and I've taken a few vacation days so we can play together!

We used a low water immersion method to get colors with "texture".

I got all my dyes and chemicals as well as pfd fabrics via internet order from Dharma Trading Company, and the "tools", bins, spoons, measuring cups, buckets, etc. from the local dollar store.

This batch was done with just two colors of dye, deep purple and fuchsia, and is for my daughter, who loves purple.

Enjoy~

And here are the fabrics "in process".

Fabulous! They are gorgeous, and what a fun project! Can't wait to see what you make with them. What was the base fabric that you used?

tealfalcon 06-13-2012 06:35 AM

How cool beautiful fabrics

DollyMomma 06-13-2012 06:35 AM

I want to do this! What is pfd fabric? Do you have any idea how durable the colors will be? This is kinda like your own tye dye/batik look - I bet you could figure out how to do the patern if you wanted to as well...now my mind is thinking...it is a dangerous thing! (or so I am told!...he he he he - I'm gonna think away!)
Thanks for sharing - love the ideas and color choices!

Love them great colors

Mariposa 06-13-2012 06:38 AM

Gorgeous fabrics! Love those colors! Looks like a really interesting project. Might you share the details of how you did this-?

kathy 06-13-2012 06:38 AM

isn't it fun?! some fabrics feel "tough" after dyeing and are hard to sew, I get the best results using cotton sateen.
Have fun.

MaryMo 06-13-2012 06:38 AM

Thanks for showing the process. It looks like fun to do ... looking forward to seeing the projects made with these fabrics.

I do love the colors mom! Thanks for letting me play with your stuff:) I love them so much!

OmaForFour 06-13-2012 06:43 AM

Those colors and patterns in them are gorgeous! I think you should go into business selling them and I will be your first customer. Let me know!!

What a fabulous day you both had. I love the fabric colors, so vivid and pretty! Look forward to seeing them in a project.

Pennyquilter88 06-13-2012 07:04 AM

Looks like a messy job to do, but wow! The colors came out gorgeous! Great job and glad you had time to play with your daugther.

liont 06-13-2012 07:07 AM

What fun! How nice to have a yard to mess around with, no fears of spills!
I've always wanted to try my hand at shibori.. I'll have to wait till I get my hands on the right chemicals, and good working space.

BeckySt 06-13-2012 07:21 AM

wow, great job, those are amazing colors, wish I had time to try it.

SewExtremeSeams 06-13-2012 07:22 AM

WoW Wendy! You've got my attention with that fabulous fuscia (my fave color) and the gorgeous purples. I may just have to "play" this summer, also. Thanks for posting.

DebraK 06-13-2012 07:33 AM

great job! Makes me want to pull all my dyes out.

That looks like so much fun......I have wanted to do this for a while. Thanks for the inspiration! Your fabrics look amazing!

Laura in Montreal 06-13-2012 07:50 AM

Wonderful work, Wendy! I love the textures you've got there. I tried this, too, last year. I bunched the fabric up into tight bundles and secured each bundle with rubber bands. I was using blue, so I got an underwater kind of look. You can almost see it on the borders of my Matisse quilt. (http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t189471.html)

BrendaK 06-13-2012 07:51 AM

How KOOL is this. Just love all the colors so vivid. Did you take a course on how to do this or did you just wing it? This looks so messy but a lot of fun. Could you do a tutorial on how this was done with just two colors? Makes me want to go get messy! Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see what you and your daughter put together from this fabric. Thanks for the inspiration. BrendaK

Wow Laura, nice quilt! Did you dye the light and medium blue panels also?

No, the light blue panel is a Stonehenge fabric (Glacier, I think), and the other is a tone-on-tone blue from Fabricville, here in Montreal.
