Finished Baby Quilt for a Little Girl

2 Attachment(s)
Hi ...I just finished this baby quilt- no grand-kids yet but hope they will take the hint anyway lol
I had one major problem in that there was a bit of buckling with the outside edge..what would cause this?..is it the binding or did I use too wide an outside edge to finish. The quilt is 40 inches by 50 inches.
I still have a long way to go but absolutely love quilting-even if I did come into it late-I still darent show my husband how much of a fabric stash I have !! Only been quilting for about 6 months or so-oh goodness!

How very pretty! Love the butterflies and your quilting is fabulous! I have had the same issue with borders and I talked to my LQS and they told me the best way to do borders is to measure your quilts exact size and cut your borders to that length. Then sew them on making sure they fit the quilt. I have not tried this yet but plan to do so on my next project.

Love the fabrics, colours and above all the exquisite quilting. Are you sure it's been only 6 months? Wow, you are a born star! As for the size of the stash and the husband - my mom says men should not know everything.

Beatuiful!!!!

Your quilt and quilting is beautiful! I find straight of grain binding lies flatter than bias binding. With straight of grain binding because it is more stable, you can use it to ease in a little extra fullness sometimes. I also use double fold binding because it has more weight and kind of acts as a frame for my quilts.

Beautiful. I just made 12 blocks with the tube method. Have been trying to figure how to set it together. This gives me another idea. Thanks for sharing.

Tweety2911 04-16-2012 04:34 AM

Your quilt is gorgeous and so is your quilting!

Vivian Ketron 04-16-2012 04:35 AM

Wow you do amazing work for a newbie! Love your quilt and the quilting!! Such an addicting pass time :)

A darling quilt for a little girl. As for borders that do not buckle, years ago I was taught to measure at the center of the quilt and use that measurement to cut the border fabric. You might give that a try. It has worked very well for me.

Beautiful quilt! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I agree with this. Measure the vertical center to get the measurements to cut the borders for the long sides and then measure the horizontal center to get the measurements to cut the borders for the top and bottom. The quilt is very pretty!!!

Your quilt is beautiful. Love your colors and quilting is beautiful. Also love your optimism about the eventual grandchild. You also brought up a very interesting point...not sure if you love quilting yet. I have been quilting for more than 30 years and there are days I just hate the whole process or at least part of the process. One thing I do know for sure, I love the colors of quilting. My favorite part is buying fabric with my best friend and having lunch out afterwards. The rest, not so much!

Grandma Bonnie 04-16-2012 06:57 AM

Beautiful quilt! I love the quilting you did on it! Great job!

That is so pretty! Great fabric and color choices.

irishphoenix 04-16-2012 02:38 PM

heh heh thanks...the tips about measuring from the centre of the quilt are really good, so thanks for that. I just cut the width I wanted then sewed them in place-any left over was trimmed...but thinking about it I may have not cut them with and against the grain- you know two lenghts with and two lengths against the grain, well thats what it told me in the book I read,to keep the quilt rigid I think- but I may have had a senior moment and forgot and just did them all the one way...oops. I used double binding all the way round.
I really loved the comments about DH- yes agree, they dont have to know everything!!

Nanaquilts44 04-16-2012 02:44 PM

It is just beautiful and I love the quilting.

irishphoenix 04-16-2012 02:51 PM

Pat- just saw the link you posted up...OMG I thought that was so true!!! I am not that bad yet...but give me time!

You know my favorite thing is putting the colours together which I love- I could spend hours laying them all out and moving them around..I have to work on my making up though-I absolutely hate ripping seams which happens regularly and keeping measurements exact too is very hard!!
