I saw a picture of this triple 9 patch in Country Quilts mag from earlier this year. The article was about favorite country quilt patterns and caught my eye as something I would like to reproduce (no pattern but hey that makes it all the more fun!). I really enjoy learning about the history of quilts and the caption with this quilt described how indigo blue was often used as the dye was easy to get.
My quilt is king sized, just the top for now. Any suggestions on quilting designs? I stick to the basis when it comes to quilting - usually stitch in the ditch or just wander an equal distantce with my presser foot - nothing fancy. Besides, I've no idea how I am going to stuff all this fabric into my sewing machine to quilt it! I am considering tying it. Will probably try to stitch in the ditch the patch blocks and tie the center of the blue blocks.

This looks like a really fun top :-)

It looks like a wonderful top to practice some new daisy or easy feather pattern in those large squares.
In the pieced square section is every little square got a pieced leading sewn around it too

I love that... it looks so traditional.

Love it. I think that you should try some kind of a pattern in the blue squares like a flower or something. If you did it in a different color of thread it would really set it off.
Keep up the good work.

This is a lovely top! I think quilting in the ditch on the patch squares is a good idea, but I was thinking a design in the blue would be great. Tying it would be great, too.
I agree with ccbear66, a flower would be pretty in the blue squares.

Whatever you choose, be sure to show us pics. I love it! I know it will be beautiful!!!

You did a great job! I like it. Did I ever mention Blue was one of my favorite colors? Very Nice!
Have you thought of continuing the "stitch in the ditch" pattern on in the blue squares...I ask for a reason....If you are unsure of quilting on the machine then a simple pattern, which those echoed lines would be, is a great way to get more comfy with the process. You would also be able to extend the quilting across several blocks in a straight line going from one ditch to the next. Just a thought. Good luck whatever you decide.

I think its great. I would do either a flower or feather desing (werath , oval) in the blue squares

Thanks for all the great ideas. I would really like to try a simple flower design in the blue and all your encouragement makes me feel like really giving it a try! For backing I am going to pick up a cheery yellow with small blue flowers (at least that's the plan for the moment). I made two extra patch squares and cut out 2 extra indigo squares to make pillows. I don't have enough of the blue left over for the binding and am afraid that a lighter color (the yellow from the backing) would look odd (what do you think?). Maybe a darker blue? Other than cutting this went together so quickly and was fun to make.

I would suggest taking a square with you when you go to pick the fabric...That way you can "match" it a little better and see what works best. :)
