First quilt with all solids

3 Attachment(s)
This is the first quilt I've done with all solids. I wanted to do something a bit more masculine for my adult stepson, and this is what I came up with. I pieced and quilted it with my Brother PQ1500S. This is the third quilt I've finished, so I think I have to stop calling myself a new quilter now, even though I still feel very inexperienced. I have so much to learn!

Oh, by the way, the quilt pattern in the rectangles is the free motion swirl, which I learned from Angela Walters in her Craftsy class, Free Motion Quilting in Negative Space. So many great ideas! Loved it! I did all free motion squirrels and, if you look closely, you'll see one free motion squirrel. Scott loves squirrels, so I had to throw one in there. :) Thanks for looking!

With beautiful quilting like that your a pro.
Love the quilt and quilting.

It looks to me like you're learning very fast. I love your quilt.

JenelTX 11-12-2012 07:57 PM

Thank you so much! Just don't look too closely. LOL I don't quite have the rhythm down yet, so the stitches definitely aren't even. Also, on the next quilt, I won't use variegated thread. I thought it would look cool on the back, but it's sort of disconcerting to see the thread when it's dark and then not see it when it goes light. Next time, I'll match the backing fabric more closely so all you see is texture.

Beautiful quilt & I'm sure he will love it. It doesn't look like only your third quilt! Great job!

I love this!!!

JenelTX 11-13-2012 05:08 AM

Thank you so much, everyone! If anyone's interested in making this, it's really easy. I didn't have a pattern. There are four sizes of rectangles and one square.

6.5x2.5 inch
6.5x4.5 inch
4.5x2.5 inch
2.5x2.5 inch

You need the same number of each size, and all in a mix of colors. Then just mix and match.

Great quilt and quilting and I do see your squirrel!

#1piecemaker 11-13-2012 05:18 AM

You've done a great job. Didn't find the squirrel though. My eyesight isn't as good as it once was.

BrendaK 11-13-2012 05:18 AM

That's kool. Haven't thought about doing a solid quilt but I really like the way you have done this. Your quilting is super. Sometimes I have a problem doing a crooked line. BrendaK

The squirrel is in the third picture (the close-up), in the large, dark rectangle. Just one squirrel in the whole quilt. :) I'm not going to tell him about it; I'm just going to see if he notices it.

Very pretty quilt and quilting. I like the solids.

jc469273 11-13-2012 05:49 AM

That is a beautiful quilt. I love all the different colors. Solids are becoming very popular now. I have all boys and they prefer solids. You are certainly more than a beginner.

carolynjo 11-13-2012 08:07 AM

Good job. You're right to stop calling yourself a newbie quilter. Just enjoy the process. We all learn something on every quilt we make.

nativetexan 11-13-2012 08:58 AM

you should name it "find the squirrel". very nice!!

I loooooooove that!!!! I might just have to do that, but not tell him that's the name for a few weeks. That's hysterical!

QuiltnNan 11-13-2012 09:44 AM

Rumbols 11-13-2012 12:41 PM

Very pretty. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

AnnieH 11-13-2012 12:44 PM

You are at a similar stage to me (just finished my 3rd quilt) but you are way ahead. Your quilt is great and the quilting is brilliant. Fabulous idea to go with the solids for a male.
He will love it.

I love the solid color quilt. What a great way to make a masculine quilt. It's really cool and your quilting is top notch. Keep on quilting.

RDM 11-13-2012 04:40 PM

Wonderful color placement. I especially enjoyed seeing your quilt as I'm leaning towards using more solids. Your quilting is great. I think you're way past being a "new" quilter.

susansomethings 11-13-2012 04:58 PM

What a wonderful quilt!!!!!

JenelTX 11-13-2012 05:00 PM

Thank you so much, everyone! I definitely have a lot to learn and need more practice with the quilting. But overall, I'm really pleased, and I think he'll like it. It's funny, my original idea was based on the color gray. So I picked out a gray I liked and then picked out all the other colors. And in the end, I realized that all the colors looked good together except the gray. LOL So it looks nothing like my original idea, but I am happy.
