This is an update to a call for help I made a week or more ago. I've been working on a lonestar quilt for a couple of years-- I put it away a couple of years ago because I ran into a problem. I didn't realize it at the time, but have subsequently learned that I did not cut my diagonal strips wide enough. As a result the "side arms" of my pieced diamond shapes did not line up. I tried a variety of fixes, including blocking and starching, but the difference between desired shape and reality was too much-- I've learned that if your block is over 1/2 or 3/4" off, it's pretty impossible to block to the right size.

But Peg proposed a solution that did work; it offers a different look, but is at least better than throwing the whole thing in the fire, which was darn tempting!

I post here the before and after photos. There's one more mistake (two actually) that I have to fix; can you identify it? (Sigh...)

I still have more to do to finish the top, but wanted to show you what I've done so far.

Thanks again, Peg.

After taking the pieced stars apart, I created this image to show where the problems were

This is the proposed solution by Peg

And this is the execution of Peg's advice

That looks pretty darn flat to me.

Don't you feel good that you stuck it out and fixed it?

sinceresissy 03-11-2011 05:22 AM

Good fix. Very ingenious. I hope the next boo boo is the two squares are backwards which is easy to fix.

dakotamaid 03-11-2011 05:23 AM

Good solution!

Mariposa 03-11-2011 05:23 AM

Looks like a great fix to me! Pretty colors too~

suezquilts 03-11-2011 05:25 AM

Before you sew the diamonds together it is best to square up them. My girlfriend made me a template for this.
then you can sew them together.
I have made several of these. Squaring up keeps the bump in the middle away.

Wonderful recovery. Isn't it fantastic to have all the knowledge and help from the talented quilters on this board! This could not be prettier.

Murphy 03-11-2011 07:06 AM

This turned out very nice. Thank you for sharing.

irishrose 03-11-2011 07:22 AM

I like the drama added by the recovery strips. It will be gorgeous when it's finished.

littlehud 03-11-2011 07:23 AM

Amazing. That worked so well. It's a beautiful quilt.

Barb_MO 03-11-2011 07:43 AM

Like the new design that the strips made.

sharoney 03-11-2011 07:44 AM

Wow! It looks great!

agdetrick 03-11-2011 07:47 AM

It is beautiful.... what is the pattern on the corners?

gramarraine 03-11-2011 07:52 AM

Love the way you fixed it and love your colors. It is pretty enough to be in the new Quilt in a Day Radiant Star book by Eleanor Burns.

sidmona 03-11-2011 08:00 AM

That looks so pretty!

JenniePenny 03-11-2011 08:13 AM

OKLAHOMA PEACH 03-11-2011 08:26 AM

Great job!

gal288 03-11-2011 09:22 AM

Jilliane, looking good, it does change the look, but I like it, you did a great job, be proud of your salvage. No one need ever know, it's your secret & you created a nnew quilt layout.

2 blocks pointing in, by the way!

I'' m currently piecing a lone star myself, only as far as piecing star ppoints, next is setting. Keep your fingers crossed for me, ok!
I' ll post my version when done, errors too.

It was a pleasure helping you, & thanks again for the very nice PM.

PaperPrincess 03-11-2011 11:16 AM

Great fix. After all the work re-doing the star, turning those 2 blocks will be a cinch. I know, because I keep sewing blocks the wrong way round myself ;-) so I've had practice.

CorneliaVa 03-11-2011 11:42 AM

WOW! That's what I love about this Board .... no "problem" is beyond repair with all the experts to help us out ..... "Problems" are merely "challenges" to them....

Kudos to you both!

Janet Orfini 03-11-2011 11:46 AM

PERFECT

Love Peg's idea to fix. I wouldn't have thought of that. Love your execution too - will definitely do the job. Well done.

aberi 03-11-2011 12:18 PM

I also wanted to say I love the border you did! It really makes the quilt pop!!!!

bamamama 03-11-2011 12:20 PM

Good solution! I tried to make a Lone Star a while ago and it looked like a "D" cup!. Gave up on it.

boohoofish 03-11-2011 01:36 PM

Great fix - pretty colors - a wonderful quilt when done.

sherriequilts 03-11-2011 01:44 PM

It will be beautiful! Get to find a solution and a lot of help!

BizzieLizzie 03-12-2011 04:07 AM

I have never made one but it is looking good at the moment. Do you think perhaps when it is quilted that will smooth things out more? I can't see anything obvious. I think you have done a splendid job of this!

allie1448 03-12-2011 04:44 AM

looks fabulous! so glad you stuck with it!

bluadept 03-12-2011 05:31 AM
