ok, so I have a flower stitch foot and that thing came with NO directions...oh they are in the box but really....nothing I do is making flowers like what they show can be done...

If you have one of these and can make FLOWERS with it, please, please, please tell me what I am doing wrong!

In my pix are the samples I did the other night.
The fabric is layered with batting..I did NOT like just a double layer of fabric..it preferred the batting sandwich! That pink thread is a vintage varigated DMC embroidery thread that is 50wt. As you can see on the Ultrasuede, the pink sunk in and sort got lost. I had to use a heavier weight thread on the ultrasuede, but it did fine with NO stabilizer...

JUST no flowers...cute circular designs, but I want the big spirograph flowers they say you can make with this thing!

tammy cosper 06-29-2011 05:41 PM

I have this, but I haven't been able to try it out yet.

bjeriann 06-29-2011 05:43 PM

What if you use a stabilizer like when you do machine embroidery?

this is what I am thinking...I first did it on just a piece of fabric folded over and it did NOT like that...so I had that sandwich piece handy and tried it and it was amazing the difference...I told my friend who was on the phone with me the whole time, that I think it needed stabilizer. Since I do not do machine emb. I have NO clue what to use! I love how it did on the ultrasuede, but like I said...the flower still does not look like what the pix shows...

bjeriann 06-29-2011 05:49 PM

Try freezer paper if you have it because you can iron it to your fabric.

oooohhh....good idea...I have some stabilizer but it not fusible...think I will try the freezer paper..I have that on hand too!

I can buy stabilizers wholesale, just have NO clue what I would need...way too many choices out there! ANd they are so costly...

bjeriann 06-29-2011 05:56 PM

I always get a light weight and if I need heavier I just add another layer or 2. Do you have basting spray. That will work with the no iron stabilizer.

um..no basting spray..can not tolerate that stuff...will try the freezer paper..like you said, I can always BUILD layers if I have to!

Dee G 06-29-2011 06:05 PM

You can use the stabilizer you have, by spraying it with a temp. spray and it will stick to the back of your fabric. If needed, you can use more than one layer of stabilizer.

Thank you for the links...I noticed that their flowers really do not look much different than mine...

I can see I have some more PLAYING around to do for sure! I will post more pix what I am doing soon!

Prism99 06-29-2011 06:22 PM

I think it's actually a different attachment that makes the spirograph type flowers. It's been awhile, and can't remember the name. Will link it if I can find it.

Edit: Maybe not. I did find this Bernina circular attachment which can be used to make spirograph type designs.

on the paper that is in the flower stitch foot, it shows a loopy flower...I have yet to see anyone make that flower with this foot...but I am determined!

You use a loopy straight stitch to get a loopy round. You know, like a scallop stitch.

GGinMcKinney 06-29-2011 06:43 PM

I think I read a used fabric softener sheet can be used as stabilizer.

#1piecemaker 06-29-2011 06:45 PM

Sorry. I'm no help. I've never even seen one.

this is the one someone talked about the other day..they showed how if you don't have a BErnina you can do the same thing with a piece of cardstock and thumb tack!...must try that as well...

I think that maybe I have the same "flower" attachment. I can't make anything bigger than 1 3/4 " with it. It was a great disapointment! Also, the fabric has to twirl around & that won't work too well using it to quilt on a quilt............ a waste of $$

I don't think it is a waste of money, it just has limitations on its uses. You would definately have to use it in a block and NOT on quilting! I got mine to use for decorative stitches on pockets, etc for bags I make, or mug rugs..it will work fine for that...I don't think even the circular attachment would work on quilting...

connie_1936 06-29-2011 08:57 PM

i would use a water soluble stabalizer. freezer paper won't wash out. you can buy a small roll of stabilizer it has lots of uses, maybe split a roll with a friend.

Steady Stiching 06-30-2011 04:51 AM

You might want to try some water soluble stabilizer on the back of the sandwich and maybe loosen the tension a little.
Looks like a fun foot!

PaperPrincess 06-30-2011 05:26 AM

I have the older version of the quilting table for my Viking SE. It has a series of holes that you can use for circular sewing, using a push pin. you can make a circle from about 3" up to 18", in 1/2" increments. Works great, but you need to go slowly & stabilize as needed. Thanks for the spirograph link. I'll have to try that one!

Matilda 06-30-2011 06:10 AM

Jacquie, Would it help to use a hoop as well as stablizer? The stitch is pretty though.

sjdal 06-30-2011 06:29 AM

I've been told to heavily starch my fabric and use stabilizer when doing embroidery. I think this would help with your success.

it might,,but I was just testing on small pieces...I do have a series of hoops though..so might also try this!

just use printer paper...I save the misprints and other pages I do not want for this. I works fine. I used it the other day to do decorative stitching around the neck and hems of teeshirts. I have used it for years and only go to the more expensive stuff when doing machine embroidery in a hoop.

I did see that there were small pieces. I wonder, too, if spray glue might help such as 505 or Sullivan's.

Matilda 06-30-2011 07:48 AM

Here is a link for more pictures. These are neat!

I never thought to google just the images...way cool!
I can see that some go over the flower more than once...neat effect..there are tons of possiblities with this..just in changing your threads!

I must find time to sit back down and PLAY....it is time consuming..but it is for the GOOD of quilterkind every where!

this is My foot exactly!

This is more what I would like to make..the far right AND the one right under the foot!

Have you tried stretching the fabric in a small embroidery hoop, if the attachment will fit into it.

it would take a fairly large hoop...that foot is big!
but hooping is on my list of things to try...

brightstar_202 06-30-2011 10:07 AM

I had that problem when I emb. but if you use a lite wt. stabelizer and put the thread through the eye of the bobbin it should work fine. Have you tried that yeet?

No, I have not, but I am gathering a list of things to try, and experiment with!

IBQUILTIN 06-30-2011 05:06 PM

The best stabilizer I have found for this sort of thing is coffee filters, and they are not expensive

Dee 06-30-2011 05:52 PM
