Friendship Quilt

2 Attachment(s)
These blocks belonged to my friend's mother. They were made in 1933 but had never been put together for a quilt. I finished it for her this morning. I had to add the sashing material and a strip on the back, the rest is all 1933 fabric.

You did a beautiful job! Will be treasured!

Tartan 09-08-2012 10:19 AM

What a wonderful treasure you have finished! The memories associated with the signature blocks will be interesting. Is your friend's mother still alive to tell some of the stories of the people's blocks?

so nice to have it put together... good work

That is stunning. I collect vintage fabric when I see it at estate sales. Have some bubblegum pink yardage that looks similar to some in the quilt. It is only 36" wide!

No, my friend is in her mid-80's, but she says she remembers most of the people whose names are on the blocks. I am going to take it to her in Mid-Oct when my bro and I head to New Mexico via Texas.

quiltinggirl 09-08-2012 05:34 PM

OMGosh, this is so beautiful!!

MaryMo 09-08-2012 05:41 PM

I have a similar one passed down from my grandmother dated 1936. She never used it, just had it stashed somewhere. When she died in 1939 (from consumption/tuberculosis?) it went to her oldest daughter (my aunt) who saved it in a cedar chest. (She didn't use quilts.) My aunt gave it to me when she gave me her cedar chest. I treasure it, just not sure what to do with it.

Beautiful! Isn't there something beyond words wonderful when you take something like that and finish it?!! I have done a couple of those for friends of my Mom and they are truly loved. Congratulations!

It was a piece I had in my stash. No idea when or where it came from! But I thought it "fit".

THat is such a beautiful quilt... what stories those blocks could tell... If she remembers why they signed and who they were be sure to write it down and keep it with the quilt. You did a wonderful job.... be sure to put a label on it.
I love old quilts and love the stories...

Great job.... I love it. I would be a great to make one for a family tree quilt if you had your family members sign their names.... I'll think I'll do one like that. Absolutely love it. Thanks for sharing.
