Handkerchief Quilt

1 Attachment(s)
Howdy y'all :c)

A few months ago, I saw a lap quilt somewhere on the internet that was made out of ladies hankies. I thought it was beautiful, and decided to make one on a little bit larger scale to give to my ex-mother-in-law to put on her bed at the nursing home she is in. I just got it finished yesterday, and I think it turned out pretty good. :c) What do y'all think?

So very pretty - and such a wonderful gift. Did you buy them or did you have a hankie stash ??

I got them from eBay, but AFTER I bought them and already had them fused onto the fabric, my sister gave me a bunch she had collected over the years. I have enough to make 2 more now! LOL!

Thanks! All I did was to use Wonder Under to fuse the hankie to the fabric underneath. I then sewed around the inner edge of the scallops around them. I also used fabric glue under the scallops. It was a very quick and easy quilt to make. :c)

This is one quilt I do want to make after the holidays. I have all of my mothers hankies, she passed away almost
2 years ago age 99. I love the way you used different color fabrics for the background.

earthwalker 10-12-2012 01:38 AM

Very very pretty. I hope you have her name permanently on the quilt so it doesn't grow legs.

sniktasemaj 10-12-2012 10:28 AM

It looks cheerful and will be wonderful for her.

AUQuilter 10-13-2012 02:43 AM

Moonglow 10-13-2012 05:18 AM

Very pretty. Thank you for sharing.

helenquilt 10-13-2012 05:48 AM

Be sure your name is on the quilt or her name. quilts have a way of getting lost in a nursing home.

MimiBug123 10-13-2012 07:16 AM

It's really pretty and I'm sure she will love it. It's so special when people take time to do things for people who can no longer do for themselves. You did a super job!

huntersgrammie 10-13-2012 07:25 AM

what a wonderful way to display them. could you post a few more pics of it so i can get a better view. i have these southwest hankies that i wanted to do this with but didn't have any ideas how to display them but i love what you have done. just need to see more of it. please and thank you.

4EVERquilt 10-13-2012 07:26 AM

It turned out really good, beautiful and she will love it.

ItsJustMe 10-13-2012 07:28 AM

The quilt is just beautiful, and such a kind and loving gesture on your part.

carolynjo 10-13-2012 07:36 AM

It's beautiful. Just make sure that you have large identification on the back. Things like that grow legs and walk away very quickly.

bibi 10-13-2012 07:43 AM

It is so lovely, thanks for sharing.

milikaa1 10-13-2012 09:12 AM

Beautiful quilt, she will love it.

yippie 10-13-2012 09:39 AM

I love this and you MIL will love it also

My mom passed away in January of this year, I was lucky enough to receive her and my grandmother handkerchiefs, this look like the best way I have seen to place them with out damage to them.
Could you let me know how you placed the handkerchiefs, I think i read that you fused them.

happy quilting yippie

stichinluvr 10-13-2012 09:52 AM

I think she is 1 lucky MIL! Glad you still love her.
