Hi,
Someone asked about hanky pankies. Here are some pictures of the two I made. We had a speaker at both of my guilds who published a book on handkercheif quilts. She used a single hanky in the middle with a theme and surrounded it with lots of interesting borders. I have a collection of hundreds of hankies. I probably won't use most of them. This one I made for Valentines Day and supposedly gave it to my husband. I couldn't resist as the hanky had my name on it. This is the first one I made. It was fun to embellish. |

I have handquilted a top for a customer that were made with hankies. Each block had a butterfly whose wings were a folded hanky. The body parts were embroidered. I have a pattern for a bed size quilt that has ladies whose dresses are made from folded hankies. You can even make them a bride with a veil or a spanish lady. The little quilts are made by cutting the hankies either in half or quarters. The ones I made are based on the Hanky Panky book. I also have a pattern that you make blocks with a shirt pocket on them that you then stuff with a folded hanky. As a young woman my mother worked in the local dime store behind the lunch counter. I have a picture of her in her uniform with a pocket including folded hanky. Someday I will get around to transfering the picture on to fabric and making a hanky quilt around the picture and the theme.

Handkerchiefs were the topic of conversation at our house a couple of months ago. My sister wanted to give her friend (a mother of the bride) a handkerchief for her to carry at the wedding. She shopped around and never could find a handkerchief. Some of the clerks in the stores did not know the word handkerchief. Isn't that sad. So we talked about it with the grandchildren. I pulled one out so they could see what we used before Kleenex.

I live in the middle of Amish country and there are still Hankies in the little Amish stores. Some are so pretty.

How fun this must have been to plan and make! I love projects that give your creative side a little room to play!
These are very pretty ... good job! I am looking forward to seeing the one with your mom on it too. |
Your hankie quilts are beautiful!!! I love the buttons you use on them too--are they also old?

I couldn't get by without hankies!!! If I get the sniffles and use paper tissues my nose turns red and hurts. I have a few allergies and can't be sure if it is something in the manufacture of tissues, or, as someone told me with great authority, particles of the tissue themselves (they are basically made of wood, like all paper, I presume.
Sadly my hankies are disolving with age and use. It especially hurts that my mother's hankies are gone! I have looked for hankies and finally bought some from China after seeing a notice on this QB. They came in goodly fashion, but they are all cotton, but printed, not sewn! Printed lace, printed flowers, etc. A far cry from the hankies that Mama had! Maybe with some clever on-line hunting someone could find some that are suitable for a wedding. Hmmm, do wedding shops possibly sell real, lovely hankies. How could they not! The traditional "something blue" or "something old" frequently was a hankie (in the olden days when I got married). |
