I just finished this last night, having started it a couple of days ago. I used some scraps of batik given to me by a neighbour of my Mum's - I would never of dreamed of buying these, they're so bright, but now I love them! :-D I made the string blocks inspired by Bonnie on www.quiltville.com but I used fusible batting as well as cotton foundation squares, then I joined the blocks QAYG using this method (thanks Butterflywing!)

http://welshquilter.blogspot.com/200...as-you-go.html

I had a strip not completely sewn under the sashing that I didn't spot until sewing on the binding so I appliquéd a heart to hide it, then a few more because it looked odd on it's own! I sewed in two corner pockets to insert a dowl for hanging - saw this somewhere on the net a while ago and this is the first time I tried it - it works great! The blocks are 6" finished and the hanging is 24" square. :-D

The back - don't know why I did the strips in black though, white would have been better!

So pretty! The black on the back doesn't matter, it won't be seen. But you did such a great job that the back looks great. I love batiks and you have used them to make a work of art.

Thanks Lisa - yes, when I was cutting the strips for the QAYG, I just cut them both from the black without thinking duh! I guess if it was bigger you could play chess on it!

MissTreated 01-26-2010 01:16 AM

very pretty, especially since it's batiks!

I can't believe that I used to think they were hideous!

Quilt4u 01-26-2010 02:31 AM

Very Pretty.

MamaBear61 01-26-2010 03:52 AM

I really like that, and I usually am not fond of brights, but you have done a wonderful job and I also like the black sashing on the back too

marsye 01-26-2010 04:18 AM

That looks great! That would look good with family photos in the blocks.

Mamagus 01-26-2010 04:27 AM

That's so pretty! Isn't it amazing how our opinions change over time AND exposure. I thought batiks were cheap and gaudy looking. Now I fondle them longingly!

Katrine 01-26-2010 04:34 AM

Just lovely K, and love the little hearts, what with Valentines coming along soon! Colours are beautifully arranged.

jabs317 01-26-2010 04:40 AM

Wow Kathryn, that is stunning!!!!! Aren't batiks amazing..they transform when they go into a quilt. Now I want to make that!! It would also be a cute doll quilt! Love the holders too---I'll have to try that on the next smallish quilt I make.

I also checked out the method for quilt as you go. I don't think I'd have the patience for it. But the quilting and overall effect came out beautifully!

That would look great on my WALL! I would want to enjoy that with a cup of warm coffee every morning. The black really makes it POP which is amazing as batik tends to pop all by itself without any assistance but this is gorgeous.

sandpat 01-26-2010 06:47 AM

Kathryn, I love that! I wasn't always a huge batik fan, but I'm really really warming up to them too. I love the black you used as it makes it look like you are looking at a warm sunset out the window (well..if you squint and haven't had much coffee...yet)

Candace 01-26-2010 06:55 AM

Batiks feel so much crisper to me than normal fabric. I love them.

paintedquilt 01-26-2010 06:56 AM

So very pretty

oldswimmer 01-26-2010 07:02 AM

Beautiful quilt! And I really like the corners sewn on the back for a dowel. I have never see that. I will have to give it try for a small wall hanging. Thanks for sharing!

BKinCO 01-26-2010 07:23 AM

Absolutely stunning! I am not a batik fan, but this may change my mind...I love it!

k3n 01-26-2010 07:34 AM

Thanks everyone. Patti

Esq - the QAYG is very easy, the only fiddly bit is blindstitching the folded edges of the strips on the back but I actually quite enjoy that part - it's like sewing down a binding. For a little thing thing like this QAYG isn't really necessary but the technique just fitted with the Quilt As You Piece aspect of the string block. I'm already planning another one where the strings are different sizes and angles to create a heart. Well OK I'm getting all soppy and romantic - as Katrine said - Valentine's Day is approaching! ;-)

What a pretty quilt :!:
I made a quilt using brights and I also would never have bought them but now I love it. Using those bright fabrics just made me so happy working on it. It is just fun and cheerful.
I love your quilt!
