I have been trying to figure out what Civil War Fabric is. I'm not having much luck. I'm not very good at research. :oops:

I am interested in the Dear Jane. I am considering making a Baby Jane and think I want to use fabric that would be similar to that period in history.

I found these today at the local quilt shop sale. (Fabulous sale but only once a year.) I couldn't go yesterday so things were a little picked over. :( There weren't many blues left so I'll have to hunt elsewhere for more. Dag-nab-it! Another shopping trip, or two, or ... :lol: :lol: :lol:

Would any of these be considered Civil War? Any that are glaringly Not??

Those do seem to have the feel of the civil war fabrics. Usually the CW fabrics are copied from actual fabrics from that era. Here are a few sites that have really nice repoduction fabrics

Brenda Papadakis, the author of the book Dear Jane, has a line of fabric out. I have seen in at a few shops on -line. Maybe google her name and fabric and see what you get. I did not look at them too closely to see if they match the ones in the actual quilt.

I'm no expert but I've noticed that the colors are subdued - probably because of the dyes available at the time and the 'reprints' copy that.

The first fabrics I found were the actual ones that say Civil War right on the selvage, others I got say 'vintage' or the Ozark mountains, or sometimes they say "such and so museum" .... I'm not certain of the years covered by the vintage/museum/ozark mountain fabrics but I'm making a memory quilt honoring my g-g-grandfather and he lived from 1841-1916 so that covered a considerable amount of fabric! So I'm not worried about being a stickler for "Civil War" fabric.

I didn't buy anything online, I found these all at Hancock's and a fabric place in Mobile..

Wish we had a Hancocks here. I read so much about the wonderful things people find there. :cry: I am not worried about them being exactly Civil War, just kind of the same look. I actually like a little brighter colors than what they probably had.

I think your idea of a quilt to honor your g-g-grandfather is FABULOUS! I hope you will post pics of your progress. :lol:

I'm afraid I wouldn't classify any of them as civil war era reproductions, but that's just my opinion mind you. :oops: The reds and blues are way too bright, the greens are closer, but all of the patterns are off. This website has accurate repros that you can look at by color. Take a look at the shades and patterns and compare them to yours. http://www.civilwarfabrics.com/pages...llfabrics.html Just remember, the quilt police will not come looking for you if you use fabrics that you like regardless of period authenticity! :wink:

edit: wow, that sounds way too harsh--not my intention at all. The first green and the last two are good, and the last two reds are close. Muted, duller colors were all they could get from the dyes of the time.

That's what I figured. Not Harsh! No worries. :D I just bought ones that had small prints in colors that I like. I didn't realize they actually print the same patterns as back then-but then to find them I have to read the labels!!! :?: I don't even do that with my food. :oops:

So I am going to carry on - just don't call the quilt police on me!
I like the brighter, clearer colors better. :wink: Maybe if I find some "real" CW prints (someday) I will throw those in too.

Here are some names to look for when you are looking for civil war or reproduction:
Windham, Judy Roche and Corienne Kramer for Chanticlaire fabrics, Brackman and Thompson Shiloh 1850-1870, Judie Rothermel, Marcus Brothers the Circa is from 1850's to 1870.

The links were given to me that you got from mgshaw, I found the Colonial store great and bought some really lovely civil war fabrics from there. I like your fabrics. They used what ever back then, museums can't have every print ever made. A book I saw on textiles had some bright colors....afterall I think they all fade with time. :D :D :D

Civil war seems to be the in thing right now so the fabric in that line is expensive. ...who knows what's next...the designers will come up with something :D
