Izy 02-27-2009 11:41 AM

OMG Melissa...when did this work of art get laid?????? It is absolutely fantastic, I LOVE it, so bright and cheery :D :D :D :D

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 11:42 AM

That's amazing!!!

Far out, what an awesome looking quilt!

This place is incredible, so much inspiration and talent.

:-)

mgshaw 02-27-2009 11:47 AM

I started working on it a few weeks ago, then my allergies kicked me in the butt big time last week and the first medicine I was on made me so fuzzy headed I couldnt even think to do all the math for all those different size fillers on it. But I finally got it done the other day. Seems like it took forever to do it. But those chickens are so much fun. I still have a bunch of the patterns that I didnt use, so maybe another chicken quilt in the future?

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 11:51 AM

Another one sounds like a great idea! LOL

That's so quick.... I've been working long hours lately so haven't had much time to sew at all. Snuck in a couple of hours a few nights ago and it all just went pear shaped, sewed bits on upside down, on the wrong side, you name it I did it! Spent more time unpicking and cursing than actually sewing.

So the chicken quilt is not from a complete pattern, it's one you've put together yourself? It's very impressive, looks great!

Quilting Aggi 02-27-2009 11:55 AM

That is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!!!!!!!! Did you have a pattern?

mgshaw 02-27-2009 11:57 AM

Most of the patterns came from the internet, some from books, some were bought, some were given to me and a couple I scanned some fabric, enlarged it and traced off the pattern.

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 11:59 AM

Well done dude, awesome quilt!

So what are you going to do for the border? ;-)

mgshaw 02-27-2009 12:01 PM

well not real sure on that yet!!! Thinking a narrow solid border first, then maybe a wider one of bricks from all the scaps. It is so busy already I just dont know if that would be too much chaos!!!

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 12:03 PM

Might be. But a narrow plain border would seperate it a bit, provide a "break" for the eyes. I like the idea of bricks from the scraps, to make sure it's not too busy just make the bricks a bit bigger so there are less of them. I think it will look stunning!

sewsewquilter 02-27-2009 12:07 PM

oh WOW!!!!!! It's GREAT!!!!!!

tslowery 02-27-2009 12:08 PM

its just a collection of patterns all thrown together!! :D

LoriJ 02-27-2009 12:16 PM

Its a great quilt! You've been very creative with all the different sizes and fillers. Wouldn't it be fun if you could find "chicken wire" fabric for a border? Gotta keep all those birdies in their place~! LOL

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 12:17 PM

Ohhhhh!

I have some chicken wire fabric!

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 12:18 PM

No wait, it's chicken foot prints, black on white.

But I have seen chicken wire fabric, so you can get it.

That would be very cool as a border.

Janstar 02-27-2009 12:23 PM

Melissa, that is so cute! I hope you are keeping that one, it's a treasure for sure. A narrow plain border with the chicken wire outside border would be darling. Kudos!!!!!!

Barbm 02-27-2009 12:26 PM

That is soooo cool! You did a fantastic job! You should hang it up- it makes you smile when you see it!

Melissa,
What a fun quilt! I can't decide which chicken I like best! I have many of those same patterns book marked. Someday...
You gave me a big smile today! Thanks!

MollieSue 02-27-2009 01:14 PM

I love it!!! You are sooo creative!! I think the chicken wire for the border would be perfect too!! :D

pocoellie 02-27-2009 02:06 PM

That's just absolutely adorable!!!!

Marcia 02-27-2009 02:17 PM

Oh, Miss Melissa, you done good, girl!!!! I love your arrangement and the filler strips are great. I am having a hard time deciding which block I like the best. The "fresh eggs" on the egg fabric is too cute. But the rooster in the upper right corner greeting the morning sun is wonderful, too. I just love 'em all!!! Great job.

I am on the fence about the brick border too---not sure if I am going to like it. I would have to lay some of it out and "audition" it. Keep me posted what you decide to do--remember I have more chicky fabric if you need it.

RedGarnet222 02-27-2009 02:20 PM

Oh how cute! I love roosters and chickens too.

I saw the chicken wire fabric at hancock fabrics. As a matter of fact I used it along with some dancing chicken fabric to make towels and potholders for my next door neighbor and my best friend. They both have chickens in thier kitchens. It is black with white wire all across it.

mgshaw 02-27-2009 03:19 PM

Thanks everyone!!!!
I do like the chicken wire idea, there are probably 10 different fabrics with chicken wire in the quilt but of course I only have bits of them left. I was hoping to not have to buy more fabric fort his. but thats probably what I will end up doing because I think the bricks would just be too much!!! Sure would have been nice to use up those little pieces though!!!! :D i will keep studying on it see if I can come up with any other ideas!

Blue Bell 02-27-2009 03:21 PM

I love it, I love it, I love it. It is adorable!

Moonpi 02-27-2009 03:22 PM

How 'bout a solid border with your scraps turned into appliques of chicken tracks?

BlueChicken 02-27-2009 03:23 PM

What about large pieces of chicken wire with small bricks of scrap fabrics in between?

Or a wide chicken wire border with a skinny brick border.

So many choices to make! lol

Melissa, you amaze me!! :D

I Love how you ever so casually drop in to the conversation...

'Oh I just 'threw' a whole load of patterns together' like you do!! Give yourself a great big pat on the back, cos I know just how much thought and effort went into this and boy what a result!!

Machel 02-27-2009 04:26 PM

Awww.... the chicken quilts! Inspired by Marcia's no doubt! Sindy Rodenmayer of Fat Cat is one talented chick isn't she!? I used some of her patterns in my chicken quilt. http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/11218.page

The chicken quilt is a lot of fun to do! And yours is just beautiful! Welcome to the chicken club!
