How should I quilt this?...all ideas appreciated

I am making this quilt for a wedding gift and need ideas for quilting it on a domestic sewing machine. I know how to do some free motion quilting ...need to keep it simple since it needs to be done in less than a month. If you have seen this same quilt finished elsewhere, please direct me to view it. Thanks so much.

I think the first thing I would do would be SITD between the the star centers. That would stabilize the whole quilt with a large grid pattern. I would then do feathered wreaths in each of the large white squares. The top looks beautiful!

Diane007 07-28-2012 02:58 PM

I also agree... some curved feathers would look great

feline fanatic 07-28-2012 03:11 PM

I agree 100% with tartan, that is the way to go. If you don't feel comfortable enough to do feather wreaths a "pumpkin seed" flower would also look nice in those squares. It is easy to quilt it is 4 arcs and the bow of all the arcs meet in the middle. So an arc would take up one half of the square. When they are all quilted it forms 4 pumpkin seeds that meet in the middle.

What a pretty quilt you have made!

As suggested, SITD around the stars for your first step.
Then ... Being that it's a wedding gift ... in the white space, how about a heart?
Outline it and leave as is, or do echo quilting ... or outline and stipple outside the star.

Beautiful quilt! I only know how to SITD and diagonal lines, so I can't offer advice....but....beautiful quilt!!

Wow!! what a beautiful quilt.

doloresbeger 07-29-2012 02:18 AM

Do you know the pattern name for the quilt? It is really nice. Love scrappy quilts.

Rylandon3 07-29-2012 04:18 AM

Very nice...I like to know the name of the pattern, too.

hairquilt 07-29-2012 04:41 AM

Another scrappy for me to drool over! Love it! I've seen this pattern before but don't know the name.

HillCountryGal 07-29-2012 04:43 AM

Nothing to offer about the quilting. Everyone has great ideas!

Just wanted to comment on your work... beautiful. What a wonderful gift!

ArtsyOne 07-29-2012 04:47 AM

Beautiful quilt! I would outline quilt the individual stars and then do hearts in the center squares.

#1piecemaker 07-29-2012 04:51 AM

I think I would echo quilt the stars and then quilt a design in the big blocks. Your quilt turned out great!!

Tweety2911 07-29-2012 04:56 AM

Beautiful quilt! After stabilizing the quilt the world is your oyster! You can quilt simple large flowers in the white centers or go fancy and do circled feathers. Go to google images and look up flower coloring pages for example. there are so many beautiful images that you can reduce or enlarge to your size block then copy as many as you need and pin in place and sew right over the lines with your DSM. Practice first on scrap fabric with batting if you have not done this before. You can look up just about any image you desire in coloring pages. Good Luck and I would love to see your quilt when you quilted it!

I was thinking hearts too. Maybe 4 in the large white square all pointed into the middle.
The quilt is really pretty and whatever you decide it will only add to it.

DoriDeS 07-29-2012 06:03 AM

That is a beautiful quilt can't wait to see the quilting done I love scrappy quilts!!!

BrendaK 07-29-2012 06:35 AM

Beautiful. I also would like the pattern name please. Like the idea of the hearts. I am no help as I have only done a simple grid and SID. Be sure to show us the finished quilt. BrendaK

Peggy Jeanne 07-29-2012 08:18 AM

If you can not do feathers, how about a diagonal grid? It is beautiful!

nannyrick 07-29-2012 09:54 AM

That is a very pretty quilt, but I will leave it up to the experts to give you the tips on the quilting. Thanks for sharing.

GMTA .... Like two peas in a pod? :D

stitchingcrazy 07-29-2012 12:46 PM

Beautiful quilt. I agree with Tartan too!

TrenbeathRanch 07-29-2012 01:54 PM

All good suggestions, so far. Here's another idea. SID around stars, treat the large white areas as 4 squares...quilt a 1/2 cross-hatch in each square (alternating directions). The finished look will be concentric squares "on point" within that space. You could embellish further by quilting a design of your choice within the alternate spaces between the lines. For the smaller white squares which exits at the junction of two stars, perhaps a greek key? I can't imagine how difficult free-hand work would be on a domestic machine...straight lines seem to be an easier option with that equipment. Good luck!

rj.neihart 07-30-2012 03:40 AM

Is this wedding gift going to be used as a signature quilt? If I were you, I'd quilt this on my machine by leaving an area inside each box, so a person can sign their name in one area. Just a thought. It is a very lovely top....will be looking forward to seeing the finished project.

I know I've seen this pattern before but I can't seem to remember the name of it, so I'm interested to know its name, too. This scrappy is fabulous & however you decide to quilt it, I know the happy couple will love & treasure for years to come! Great job!!!

BurchQ ... I know I've seen it too and believe it's on QuiltersCache.
:D Of course, that only gives you a gazillion blocks to go thru to find it!! :D

MarshaEIEIO 07-30-2012 05:45 AM

I do sit down machine quilting, so I scribble and do puzzle pieces all over my quilts, that would look terrific on this scrappy...and by the way...I LOVE IT !!!

bibi 07-30-2012 06:19 AM

ditto Dina, best wishes

heather1949 07-30-2012 06:21 AM

What a gorgeous quilt, great job.

Grace MooreLinker 07-30-2012 06:24 AM

DITTO on the quilting suggestions. Beautiful quilt, good job

athenascooter 07-30-2012 06:43 AM

Love the quilt and colors. Could you let us know the name of the pattern and if in a magazine or book the name also. Thanks. Wish it was for me but after 50 years (feb 2nd) I don't think I would get married again.

Debd 07-30-2012 07:07 AM

I would echo stitch inside the stars, put hearts in the little diamonds between the stars, and play in the big white areas with wreaths or celtic knots or words or stippling, or some of each!

trolleystation 07-30-2012 07:34 AM

I agree with quiltE......There is a lot of color action in your quilt. sid in stars and a heart in the plain white areas would be a great finishing touch.

Very pretty quilt.... I agree with Tartan.......

Latrinka 07-30-2012 04:52 PM

I don't know nuttin bout quiltin it, but it sho is pretty!

TanyaL 07-30-2012 05:11 PM

I would SID along the sashings and do a medium size grid, about 1 inch, in the white blocks. Since the quilt is rectangular, I wouldn't add curves. However, I really like the look of grids and find it is easier on a DSM than feathers or wreaths.

LenaBeena 07-30-2012 05:29 PM

STID then maybe names or initials in the white areas.

nls 07-30-2012 06:10 PM

Very pretty scrappy quilt!!

Gerbie 07-30-2012 08:57 PM

I too would stitch around the inside of each star, and I would also stitch around the inside of each square block. This would have the same design on the back that is on the front, only not in color. I often do many of my quilts like this, so they seem reversible. Then perhaps do some stippling in the center of each square. Maybe just echo the squares, that way it doesnt look too busy. I do not do feathers, and do not have a long arm, so I just have to rely on straight stitch in the ditch, some free motion and plain stippling. Whatever you do will look beautiful.

DebbE 07-30-2012 09:15 PM

Love your quilt! Definitely SITD, but I'd handquilt a different design in each group of 2 white squares. A heart, a few different flowers, the date of their wedding, their names, a wreath, a sun & moon, etc. You can find lots of things to quilt in those blocks, and that would make it extra special for the happy couple. If you don't want to handquilt then I'd stick with something easy, like a large heart in each of the 4 block squares.

SarahAnn 08-01-2012 04:33 AM

This is beautiful, what pattern is this. I have just gotten into scrappy and I just love this.
