I am very novice in quilting, and 4 or 5 years ago, I took a 4 Saturday patchwork and quilting class. I just wanted to know how quilts were made. I had no intention to make a big one for any bed whatsoever because I am too busy with too many other activities, but I was very curious to learn the process.

I learned to do the “Jewel Box” block, the 9 patch block, log cabin, a reversible block, the Drunkard’s Patch, and 2 sandwich blocks assembled with 2 colors binding... Hey! I was all set loll...

After the classes were over, I ended up with sampler blocks and one place mat done in class. I decided to call them my “learning” blocks of different sizes and colors, and I had no intention to leave them in a box for future generation to throw away.

My sister in law, who is an excellent quilter, lent me one of her books “The Art of classic Quiltmaking” by Harriet Hargrave & Sharyn Craig, and I decided to keep learning by myself so I could use my sampler blocks and built something around them later on.

I did not have a clue on how to choose fabrics that would look ok beside one another. Plus, this class was for learning to do small quilted projects. A big mistake I made was to pick a little bit of fabrics of different colors for each of the “small” project.

That's exactly how I started. I ended up making 9 blocks, then made it into a small wallhanging. Liked it so much I made two pillows. These colors looks great together. Maybe they aren't your coor scheme now, but these are perfect together, you have your light, medium and dark colors and they go together wonderfully. Don't be so hard on yourself. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

this first project was good to learn how to quilt it. Not too discouraging as I did not want to spend to much time at quilting yet loll

at the 2nd class we learned the 9 patch block. What I found interesting was that she made us do a place mat. So I came home with something I could use... rewarding it was. I did my homework and finished it and made a second one so I would have a pair.
I did not want to hand quilt them, so I try with my sewing machine. We use them all the time

I started my quilting yrs. by making pillows too. It's a good way to build confidence. Your pillow is really nice and so are the placemats. Keep it up now. You are doing great.

Well, I still was not in for a big project and I did not want any place mat so I made a pot holder (I don't know if that is how it's called)


the 4th project was a baby quilt with a reversible block method. Well! I did not want to make a baby quilt

the 5th block was the Drunkard’s Patch, it rested there by my sewing machine for a few years and I'll post a picture of the project I am working on now (well, have been for the last 2 years at least..) loll

the last block I learned (I think) is in fact 2 sandwich blocks assembled with 2 colors binding

i love the blocks they are great

Very nice job. My first quilting class was a bargello and I have yet to post it. Maybe someday. The colors you picked go very well together.
