A friend asked me to make a quilt for her grandson's college dorm. She had no preferences as to color so I cose dark brown and shades of teal and made Magic Squares from Jenny Doan's tute. The top is not yet quilted but my DH took a look and pronounced it too girly for a young man. I was sure the color choices were fine and I stayed away from flowers and other delicate shapes. What do you think?

BETTY62 08-25-2012 07:25 PM

I like it and do not think it's girlish. I think the colors would brighten up a dorm room.

piepatch 08-25-2012 07:25 PM

For what it's worth, I think it is perfectly fine for a boy. I don't see anything girly about it. The colors are definitely good for a boy. JMHO

Neesie 08-25-2012 07:34 PM

What, exactly, is girly about it? I have a DS and a SIL and am betting either one would love a quilt like that.

tesspug 08-25-2012 07:36 PM

My DH says you better ask the kid. He thought it was girly, too. I think its stunning. So far the women think its fine and the "boys" don't.

LoisM 08-25-2012 07:38 PM

IMO, it's not at all girlie. It's REALLY beautiful (or should I say "handsome"?) :)

cindy4857 08-25-2012 07:48 PM

Beautiful non girl quilt! You did a great job. I'm sure the grandma will be very proud to give it to her grandson.

ScrapQuilter 08-25-2012 07:48 PM

I am sure he will love it............ I think it looks just fine. Guys can like teal too.

Dolphyngyrl 08-25-2012 07:54 PM

My DH says its not girly at all!!!!!!

QM 08-25-2012 08:11 PM

Yes, ask him. It does not look "girly" at all to me and "manly" colors have changed in the last several years, but HE is the one who will be using it.

MathTeacher1980 08-25-2012 08:36 PM

I am a total tom boy so I think I can be an authority on this :)....not girly!

Merivale 08-25-2012 08:36 PM

Not too girly, by the time he has all his treasures in the room it will all work perfectly.

Mizgoodie 08-25-2012 08:43 PM

I think it's great, definitely not too girlish.

ScubaK 08-26-2012 01:01 AM

Depends on the guy! I think guys are more picky than girls.
I like it and I think it would be fine for a man.

I think you made a great quilt. I would not give it to a girl. My son is about to turn 24. He has tats and rides a motorcycle. He went shopping for a shirt and tie to go out and came home with purple !!!!

katsewnsew 08-26-2012 03:04 AM

I think its a perfect "guy" quilt! He is going to love it! Great job, good colors!

jcrilley 08-26-2012 03:36 AM

This girly thing is lame (sorry). If a man is confident in himself he could wear pink!

Judyth 08-26-2012 03:57 AM

I think it's beautiful and should be fine in a boys dorm room. Do a modern sort of quilting, no flowery thing, and it should be wonderfully received.

barri1 08-26-2012 04:00 AM

I don't think it's too girly.. I think it might be too nice to sent to college..

laurafet 08-26-2012 04:04 AM

My DH just said if the girls like it, her GS will be happy! I think it looks great!

Lorraine Simon 08-26-2012 04:30 AM

What do men know.....
I think the colors scream male.
I see nothing girlie here. If I were to give this to my GD...she would say thanks and we'd never see it again.

Jackie Spencer 08-26-2012 04:47 AM

I think its perfect, just because its not camo doesnt mean its not masculin. Manly quilts can be beautiful!!

sinceresissy 08-26-2012 04:48 AM

It doesn't look girly to me. It looks modern and uptown. I like it a lot. I think a guy would like it.

lillybeck 08-26-2012 04:56 AM

Looks good to me. Boys where these colors dont they

Suze9395 08-26-2012 05:06 AM

Boy/man quilts can be so hard. I asked my DH and he said it was neutral.

Diane007 08-26-2012 05:23 AM

I got my husband to look at it also.
He did not think teal was a girly colour.
But I agree let the young man decide about the colours.

We would not want him bullied because of the colour Teal.

angiecub 08-26-2012 05:25 AM

First of all, I want to say this is absolutely beautiful, but I agree with your husband.

#1piecemaker 08-26-2012 05:28 AM

I like it!!! I bet if you applique a couple a skull and cross bones or a motorcycle to it, it will suddenly be "boyish"

Jennifer 08-26-2012 05:32 AM

I love this color combination.

alfosa421 08-26-2012 05:33 AM

I think that the colors are just right The kids need something bright in those dreary dorm rooms. I made my daughters pillow cases Lime green!!

DoriDeS 08-26-2012 05:38 AM

Well the DH is wrong any grandson that got a quilt from his grandmother even made by someone else would love this quilt. I say finish it and get it to the grandson he will charish it forever!!!

DebbE 08-26-2012 06:04 AM

I think any young man would LOVE this quilt. But he's a younger generation, so he will look at everything differently than an older man. How about asking for an opinion from a young man around his age? That way its still a surprise, and you'll get a more accurate opinion from someone who's his age.

SouthPStitches 08-26-2012 06:11 AM

It's a wonderful quilt and not feminine at all.

kristen0112 08-26-2012 06:12 AM

I don't think it's girly...I think he will like it. Looks beautiful!

dove 08-26-2012 06:14 AM

i don't think it comes off girlie and neither does my man....:-)

lfletcher 08-26-2012 06:14 AM

I like it a lot. I personally don't think it's "girly" but men and women do have different ideas on this so perhaps you could ask the young man if he likes it. (I wouldn't ask him if it's girly and put that idea in his head.)

Helen S 08-26-2012 06:29 AM

I think it's perfect for a guy/ not girly! LOVE the colors and fabric choices!

sewsew busy 08-26-2012 06:29 AM

Love the colors. Not girley at all.

joyce j 08-26-2012 07:06 AM

I dont think it is girly , just a beautiful quilt . joyce j

Princess Bella's Mom 08-26-2012 07:19 AM

I asked my husband and he thinks it is a "manly" quilt. I think it also has a masculine feel.
