About 18 months ago I took a class from Karen Combs, she was at our guild. I've had the top done since then, finished the quilting this week. Did SID around the diamonds and FMQ for the rest. My thread matches really well, so you can't see the FMQ.

Does she have a website I saw a quilt made this way and have had my eyes peeled looking for the pattern or block instructions. I love the effect beautiful colours.

tlrnhi 02-28-2010 05:24 AM

That's pretty!

carrieg 02-28-2010 05:58 AM

Here's her website. If you ever have an opportunity to take any of her classes, she is an excellent teacher.

Color, value, and texture are what give the blocks the illusion.

Justquilting 02-28-2010 05:59 AM

Wow -- that's awesome! :D

b.zang 02-28-2010 07:24 AM

Colour, value, and texture, eh? The colour and value I would have guessed, but texture? Looks like this needs more investigation before I attempt one.

Lucky you, taking it as a class! That's a very cool effect.

jewelps 02-28-2010 07:29 AM

that is really cool, looks great

lisalovesquilting 02-28-2010 08:15 AM

Looks great! I took the same class but on a cruise earlier this month. You're right she is a wonderful teacher and very nice also. She also taught one called Transparency where you use fabrics in such a way to make some of them look transparent. I think her patterns are very easy to follow.

sewsue 02-28-2010 08:16 AM

That is something interesting and love the color combo

Candace 02-28-2010 08:46 AM

Thanks ladies! I'm trying to finish up some UFOs and WIPs this year. It was a fun class. Our guild won her! I don't remember how, but we won her as a speaker for the guild and she put on a class too.

lisa - A quilting cruise is a wonderful thing to dream about!

The texture component is sort of you don't want any real noticeable patterns, like flowery, for 1 of your fabrics. It would ruin the illusion. I used 6 fabrics - 2 colors- dark, medium and light of each and the pattern uses her diamond templates. You also use a lot of starch.

The top up close does NOT look as good as far away. It's pretty cool.

Maggie_Sue 02-28-2010 07:11 PM

Wow, I love these patterns, that is definitiely on my to do list!!!

Jim's Gem 02-28-2010 07:19 PM

It's about 32x42 or thereabouts. I will put a hanging sleeve on it, but have no clue what to do with it. The binding will be the dark purple.

It wasn't hard to do. If I remember, it was strips and there were diamond templates used to cut the pieces.

There's a pattern similar to this in the March/April 2010 issue of McCall's Quilting if you're interested.
