It seems there are so many advanced quilters - lets see some of those very first quilts. It is so fun to see how far we have come!

This is the part that was left over... my first quilt was given to a homeless shelter and I didnt take a pic. But, it looked like this, was backed with a sheet and the edges of the sheet turned over to make the binding, and it was tied not quilted. :) I sure hope that it found a home and was comforting to someone! :)

This one is about 20 years old, I was gonna use it for lining and was taking the tied threads out of it. My 24 year old son threw a fit. He said that has been around every since I can remember ,can't you fix it? So I hand sewed it back together and am gonig to tie it back up.

I would love to have something like that. Closest I have is the quilt that "started it all" given to us for our wedding from my husbands Grandmother.

They were not close and I only met her once. She has since passed away and she has no idea how big of an impact she had on my life. All with what she probably thought of as a simple quilt.

This is what I consider my first "real" quilt. Took forever to pick up pieces of fabric here and there. Had no idea they were called fat quarters at that time! I machine pieced it but was bound and determined to hand quilt it! Took quite some time but I did enjoy working on it and felt very proud when I finally completed it. I "think" this was done about 1999/2000. Still hangs above our bed.

I do not have my first Quilt. It was a panel with a border and I finished it when I was very young. Used with my first son. He *Used* it for everything.
Sadly it didn't last. But his memories of it still live in his heart.
Smiles. They do have there favorites.
Remembering many Hugs, Tents and play acts. It was used for a cape and magic carpet. Sighs
Those were the days.

I didn't get any pictures of my first, because I didn't know it was going to become a hobby! But I gave it to my sis for Christmas last year and I'm assuming her dogs haven't destroyed it, so I'll see if I remember to snap a pic next time I go over there. :)

My first quilt lives in Dallas, TX with my nephew. It has been to Ohio, Florida and now Texas. It is a trip around the world done it homespun fabrics. Hand quilted. The label is a piece of fabric that belonged to his Grandmother who passed away when he was an infant 38 years ago.

Hand- or machine- pieced?
It's really beautiful. Perfect points. The colors, the setting, the cornerstones.

Fabulous!

You all have such lovely first quilts. I don't have any of mine. I started making quilts in high school and gave them all away to my friends.

auntpiggylpn 06-28-2011 06:54 PM

Me too, I don't keep anything I make for myself, always a gift for someone else. I did buy a kit this weekend at the Shipshewana quilt show for a wall hanging that I know no one else will appreciate as much as me so it is mine. Now, to just do it and put others projects away for a moment. ..

I made my first quilt in 1973. It was for my 3 yr old daughter whose "blankie" was falling apart. Someone had given me some large bright polyester squares. I sewed them together and put her "blankie" on the inside. I used a sheet for the backing and tied it. She is 40 now, and still has the quilt. Her kids have used it and it is falling apart. I've offered to fix it for her, but she loves it the way it is! Sorry, don't have a picture and she lives in Colorado.

This is my first quilt. It was made early 2006 (like Jan or Feb) for my BFF's baby born in late 2005. I've been hooked every since. It is a simple checkerboard style (4 x 5) that was supposed to be made of squares, but I wasn't thinking and cut rectangles after sewing the 5 strips together. So it was almost square. The backing was the same blue solid in the top. I machine pieced and quilted on the little Kenmore my mom had given me (no walking foot or anything). The fabric is flannel.

This is my first quilt made less than a year ago for my DDILove's father. He is a police officer and suffered a severe stroke on the job. I wanted to make him something to let him know that we were thinking of him and to encourage him during his long months of rehab that I knew were before him.

Found out he was an avid Texas Tech. fan and so I ordered the Tech fabric online. Then took it to the LQS and told the woman helping me that I was there to get complementary fabric and a pattern. One small hitch...I could barely sew a straight seam and knew NOTHING about quilting! Instead of wondering why on earth would I try something so ambitious...she helped me find the right pattern and material. Also gave me TONS of help and encouragement so that I could go home and give it a try. Three and a half weeks later...I had a quilt! And...was hooked for life! ;-)

My first real quilt was made in 1992. Got signatures while at a family reunion and put them into this quilt The center block was signed by my Grandmother who was 97 years young at the time.

The material with her block was from one of her aprons. This was also my first time with hand quilting.

Awesome quilts all! My first quilt was made for a co-worker who was pregnant - I think it was her fourth! Anyway, she is a sweetheart and I had just gotten my first embroidery machine so decided I would make a quilt with embroidery I created from scratch! Well, I learned a LOT about how much I didn't know about digitizing and that quilting isn't really like garment sewing all that much! However, being a stubborn Taurus, I perservered and she was thrilled! Talked to her last year and she said it is still intact, but knowing now that I broke every law in the quilt police manual, I wonder if she was just being nice! All I have is this picture, so here it was and I was so proud!!!

I made this quilt over 20 yrs. ago & used it until last year when it was getting just too threadbare. The center was still good so I recycled it as batting for a lap quilt.

It is machine pieced. If you look real close, there are a few points cut off. :-o
I also quilted it on my regular small-throat sewing machine. It wasn't easy to fit the king-sized quilt in the small throat. I did sid.

Some really beautiful quilts ladies!

I started quilting after my Mom passed away from breast cancer.
I found some of her old handkerchiefs and decided to use them in a quilt (I had done much of ANY sewing....mostly repair work by hand)
But thought I would give it a try and just jumped in. Here's the finished quilt.
I just called it M.O.M. (Memories of Mom)

Sheree from Chicago 06-29-2011 03:30 AM

What a very special first quilt! I'm sure you'll treasure it always!

What an undertaking for a first quilt! I love that you used flannel from loved ones and that you did it by hand because you didn't have a machine. In awe when I see this pattern knowing the patience it takes to piece!
