Look Mom, No Hands! Sunbonnet Sue Estate Sale Find
2 Attachment(s)
Yesterday I bought this wonderful older Sunbonnet Sue quilt at an estate sale. I don't think it is quite as old as the 30's, but still has vintage fabrics.
An interesting point about it is the orientation of the girls along the outer long edges -- they are set so that they are standing upright when the quilt is draped at the edge of the bed. My picture shows the quilt on a queen sized bed. Does anyone know anything about the history of the Sunbonnet Sue pattern? I know that some have hands and some do not, but I don't know why. Thanks for looking! Dayle |
That's funny! I never noticed that before.

Great find!!! What a simply beautiful quilt! You were at the right place at the right time.

What a good idea to turn the block when they hang on the side of the bed. I never thought about that.
I'm curious to hear about the headless Sunbonnet Sues. |
nice quilt!

I'm curious to hear about the headless Sunbonnet Sues. It is "handless", not "headless". I read somewhere awhile back about the lack of hands on some of the patterns, but of course, I didn't have a "handless" Sue quilt at the time, so the information didn't stick. Dayle |

|

|
Beautiful quilt! I know there have been posts on here before about the history. Good luck, hope you find it.
|
Will be looking forward to the answer............... great find.

Beautiful find!
Amazing what people are willing to part with. |
Absolutely beautiful. That quilt is a real treasure.
|
Those are just so pretty. I have a few SunBonnet Sue's my mother left.

That's a pretty quilt, but the no hands thing freaks me out. Bar the very unlikely option that we are being inclusive of amputees and others without limbs, the only message I can take from no arms is that she is powerless. I am just getting past issues of being freaked out about never seeing her face (upside is it could after all allow any of us to imagine its a picture of us). But honestly- it's hard not to be disturbed by no hands, especially for those who work with their hands.
You could appliqué her some new hands and let her get busy! |
I am going to an estate sale today, hope I am as lucky...quilt is awesome
|
A treasure for sure!
|
What a fantastic quilt. Great find.

Beautiful quilt! I love Sun Bonnet Sues, but then I love all the traditional patterns! Glad it found a good home, and will be loved and cared for.

You could appliqué her some new hands and let her get busy! I was a first grade teacher and some of their art left A LOT to the imagination. Anyone wishing to know more about this design can google Sunbonnet Sue and Sam. There are several free printable patterns from different eras. It's interesting to see the different designs. this SS quilt is gorgeous. I love the quilting that was done. You really hit the jackpot with this one. Congratulations. |
A lucky find.
|
very nice quilt!!!!!
|
Never really noticed about the hands. This quilt is adorable.
|
I'm betting the person just left appliqueing all those tiny little pieces for last and just couldn't face doing it.
|
Great find!!!!

Interesting reading article: http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.ca/2...ue-wrecks.html
After reading the posts I clicked on the link to the sunbonnet sue history & my AVG said there was a virus on the sunbonnet sue pages, so don't go there unless your anti virus is up-to-date! It may just be my computer. |
Wonderful treasure! It's a beauty!
|
I love older quilts. This one is beautiful

Thanks, Dayle. I meant handless. My fingers are going faster than my brain, I guess. |
Lucky you.

What a fantastic find. I don't know the history of Sunbonnet Sue, but I do know she's been around for a long, long time, possibly Depression era. Enjoy your treasure and thanks for sharing.

It's a beautiful quilt, I like the double hand stitching instead of a sash, great idea, I may try that on my Baltimore album quilt if I ever finish it. As for the handless Sues maybe the quilter did not wanted to bother with tiny pieces for the hands! LOL
