Look what was covered up by another top!

This is the original top buried under a shredded top added in the 30s to pro long life of the quilt. Aside from top and bottom borders this can and will be displayed!! I'll have to fold over the top and bottom border to save it Better than going to the trash where it was headed!!

I can't understand why people throw these beauties away. I could never do that. Good for you.

LoisM 01-21-2013 03:57 PM

How wonderful! Any idea how old the original quilt is?

QuiltnNan 01-21-2013 03:58 PM

its a beautiful quilt

bobbieking 01-21-2013 03:59 PM

Love the block. Breaks my heart to hear of someone discarding a quilt...if they only knew.

mighty 01-21-2013 04:02 PM

Oh that is a wonderful quilt!!!

lallyann 01-21-2013 04:03 PM

how neat! I have an old quilt that I found at an "antique/junk" place that has a quilt inside of it. I am sooooo tempted to take the top off to see what's inside. All I can determine is that the inside quilt and the outside quilt were hand quilted and that the inside quilt has a lot of red and white!! Such mysteries!! You found a beautiful treasure!!

Not a clue!! Probably about the same as the others - late 1800 to early 1900

I was told at a lecture at the library on antique quilts that many times they use an old quilt as a batting for a new quilt top. The old saying is "waste not...want not. It was a very interesting lecture. They asked that we take our old quilts with us and she would tell us something about them. I have 2 old quilts so I threw them in a large grocery sack and took them along. One was dated CIRCA 1920 and was probably a memory quilt for someone's parents or grandparents because the fabric used was from both a woman's and a man's clothing. The other on was dated 1860's to 1870's. The oldest fabrics were from the 1860 being the double pinks and some of the other prints. The newest fabric was dated 1876 and was a print put out for the United States Centenial. Needless, to say, I did not throw them in the grocery sack but carried them very carefully back home with me.

I think it is more of being in the right place at the right time. My BIL gave me one as a gift. When I got so excited he started showing me others. When I started asking questions of their history and started writing it down for labels he came up with more. Yesterday we were leaving and I saw an old trunk and asked about it. We opened it. There were four ratty really dirty quilts. When I stared pulling them out he says those are throw aways. So I volunteered to do it. I think I can save two. Two are too far gone. It's going to depend on the washing. They are too filthy to handle right now. He has even more quilts that I do not have. They go to other family members. If they don't want them I will take them.
