So, Sept. is my bday month and I've been celebrating and buying all month! Aside from the fabrics, charm packs, and misc other items, these 2 "gifts" I should say I bought with the money I received from my parents, yes, as old as I am, they still send me something :-)
Today is the best day ever as I got these both today!!! The left is from Ebay, a 1939 Featherweight 221, and the other is from Craigslist, a 1950 Featherweight 221-1, which I drove 4 hrs. total (2 hrs each way) this morning to pick it up. My collection is off to a good start! Oh, and you won't believe the prices! Now I need to find a reputable place that services these specific machines! Any suggestions around Durham, NC? I can't stop smiling!   Of course, everyone else in the house thinks I'm CRAZY!!!! |

Happy Birthday :!:
They look great, and your not crazy...you're a quilter. We get it even if your family doesn't :!: |
Cool Machines!! Happy birthday to you.
Mine was this past Sunday!!! |
Well, *I* don't think you're crazy at all! Those are really nice machines. Congrats and Happy Birthday! :)
|
Thank you all! My bday was the 2nd and I was feeling a little down, I guess the mid life crises is kicking in. After a month of not really starting anything, I just started piecing last week for the bedroom quilt. Now if only I could win the lotto then life would be just as grand!
Jim's Gem: Happy belated bday |
Happy Belated Birthday Crafty1 and Jim's Gem mine is next Wed the 30th. I won't embarrass you by asking how old!
I love the machines! I have a 1950's Singer and that is what I sew with. I got it at a yard sale almost 30 years ago for $25! It is in a cabinet tho and has a knee control instead of a foot one. I would find it hard to part with!! Icollect the old sewing machine drawers too. They are really useful! I fully understand your excitement!! Whoohoo!! So happy for you!!! |
Happy Birthday! And what a find! I have my grandmother's featherweight. I found a shop to service it. (A sewing machine repair business located inside a quilt shop.) Since then I learned that one of the other quilt shops here has a class to teach you to do it yourself. I plan on taking it. Once you start looking around, I bet you will find a place near you that services featherweights. ENJOY!

Happy Birthday Month, to you!! :D
I like a month long birthday. Your are such a lucky person to get two of these great machines!! I am envious, but I am extremely Happy for you!! :D :D :D :D :D |
I am not familar with anyone that will specificaaly service those, but perhaps you could call a local quilt shop! Try ETC Crafts in Cary, NC or the Bernina Fabric store in Raleigh. I have dealt with both of those business before moving. I can't vouch for he sewing machine repairs, but the staff at both of these were always very nice and helpful. Also, if Carolina Sew and Vac in Raleigh is still in business, they may be able to steer you to someone that can service your "new babies". Good Luck!

Happy belated birthday! Those machines are way cool! I know at one of the shops I go to they have a new book you can buy that has lots of things about it.
I am pretty sure if you check around you are going to find someone to spruce them up. I have my mom's fifties singer portable. I just had it out the other day looking to see what it needs to be able to use it. Hubby said there was a man he deals with that does the servicing. So... I am going to have him do it. I found some of the old time bobbins at hancock fabrics a couple days ago. 12.50 for a blister pack of them. I used my 40 percent off coupon and went ahead and got them. Did you get all the attachments? These oldies were really great to have tons of the nice feet come with them. |
Oh, I'm so jealous. I've been looking for one up here. Lucky you....
Hope you had a great birthday...... |
Happy Belated Birthday to everyone! Great gifts by the way!!
|
Happy birthday...
Best gifts ever...We do understand, trust me  |
Thanks everyone! I've got lots of research and shop to visits in the near future.
Happy early bday Rhonda! SulaBug: A month long bday is a first for me! Didn't really plan on it, but as I kept buying I just said it's a bday gift, LOL vicki reno: I believe the stores you mentioned are still in business. I checked out the websites, but I think I'll just go there and see what it looks like. RedGarnet222: Did you get all the attachments? No, one came with some and not sure what they are, and the other didn't. But I'm sure I'll start collecting them after I get the 1/4" foot. I'm so glad you all understand my crazy madness! Everyone here still looks at me and shakes their heads. My daughter just asked if I named them yet, LOL. |
There's a Featherweight group on yahoo that has any information you might need to do all the servicing yourself. The group has knowelagable folks who are so helpful and nice. I have four featherweights (two black, one tan, one white) and can relate to your addition to featherweights. These little machines sew beautifully and are just so cute! :-)
|
They are lovely! Congratulations!
I have three FWs. As far as service, I promise you that there is nothing that is not super simple on these machines. If you can turn a screw with a screwdriver you can easily be a master Featherweight technician. David McCallum has a book, better yet a DVD on exactly how to do it. From routine oiling to changing the electrical cords for the foot control, even the motor brushes are SUPER easy to do. All of that can be done in just a few minutes. A complete service at a sewing machine shop will cost you more than his DVD and they likely will not do the machine justice. I highly recommend getting his book or DVD and do your own. David McCallum has a website, including a sample of his video on the 221s. He is also more than happy to answer any emails if you are having specific problems. Congrats again, you got some beauties! And, Happy Birthday! :) |
you can put one in my house , i,ll even dust it daily :D happy happy birthday to you ,  im so happy for you
|
O.K. I am tickled with your find! Kudos to you and happy Happy birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D I name my featherweights. I have "Abby", "Chloe", and "Sophie". A friend in Oregon does too. now that does sound looney ...
|
Wow!!!! Happy Birthday. Maybe I should start celebrating the whole month of May next year.

Hahaha thanks for the offer, I may take you up that, in the far far future :D |
Quilt4u: "Maybe I should start celebrating the whole month of May next year". It was fun using it as an excuse to buy something! Next one is xmas!!
alaskasunshine: My daughter wants them to be named Bella and Edward (from Twilight). |
Congrats on your new babies. What a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday. You do need to name them. Mine is "Maggie"
|
Happy Birthday from one "crazy quilter" to another!!! Great finds!
|
Lucky you! I have been itching to get a featherweight. I started the year off with two machines - my Janome and a treadle machine that the cabinet needs work on. Then I went to the Angels for Animals garage sale & bought two old metal machines in cabinets for $15 each. In Aug my dad brought me my maternal grandmothers machine, and at the end of Aug my cousin brought me my paternal grandmothers machine, both in cabinets. Finally, a couple of weeks ago I was in a thrift shop & found an old portable for $2.50, how could I pass that up?
All except the portable run great! It's a sickness. Jo |
A light weight !!! Oh ! I would love it !! Congratulations !
|
Here's the link to David McCallum's website.
http://featherweight221.com/ I bought both the book AND the DVD and took my grandmother's Featherweight apart and serviced it myself (not my husband, but ME!). I was so proud of myself, but really, it was just so simple. Didn't take long either and my grandma's machine just purrs! I have my mother's Featherweight, too, but I haven't serviced it yet. Another one of those things on my list of things to do. |
Happy Birthday!!
Wow -- I love both of them! |
happy birthday to you!!!!!
