Long time UFO finally finished! Now, how to quilt? Inspire me!

fxsts93kf 01-15-2013 08:52 AM

I'm not sure on the quilting because I've just started doing my own but I want to say your quilt is gorgeous! I'm not sure how you let that one become a UFO. :) It's really beautiful!

When I did my storm at sea and 2 hearts. I stipples small in the white. did not do the black but on yours you could go just onside the colored pieces. I did a row or two on the color part of my wall hanging.
Yours is awesome. I really like what you did. I take it that is a panel and nice job

DebraK 01-15-2013 08:59 AM

beautiful, I love your screens too. I wouldn't know where to begin. Will you be using a domestic machine, a longarm, or are you hand quilting?

ontheriver 01-15-2013 08:59 AM

Such a beautiful quilt, I absolutely love it. I am no help with quilting, I have the same problem and usually stick to edge to edge pantos on my large quilts. Maybe something oriental in flavor to keep the theme.

Forgot to say that it is great the way you carried the cranes thru the blocks, adds so much more!

QuiltnNan 01-15-2013 10:12 AM

nicely done

Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

I would do stitch in the ditch all over except the medalillion there I would tracy the birds and some long stipple in the other areas. I love you quilt by the way. :) Great job.

Was that a pattern or your own design?

I love the way the traditional SAS blocks frame the Japanese center, and I really like the stars that you incorporated into the SAS design, AND how they flow into the border.

There's something going on all over the quilt.
Oh, and the color palette, taken from the center, is DIVINE.

First I think I would SITD along some of the pieced blocks in undulating lines going in the same direction the cranes are flying in the center panel. It would kind of look like wind currents blowing across the top. After that....I don't know but your top is awesome.

Love how you married storm at sea with that gorgeous panel!!!!

Homespun 01-16-2013 06:06 AM

Gorgeous quilt. No clue as to quilting.

quiltstringz 01-16-2013 06:56 AM

Thanks for the inspiration! I have that panel and keep loving it and putting it away. Maybe when I have some time I will be pulling it out and doing something with it!

Thank you all for the kind comments!

This became a UFO when I had to quick clean up my sewing room (which is also my spare bedroom) for a surprise overnight guest. I put it away so well that I couldn't find it back again for well over 9 months! By then I was busy with other projects.

Yes it is a panel. Is there a pic of your quilt on the board? I would love to see it!

I usually hand quilt, but want to machine this one on my domestic machine and give it a little more structure as a wall hanging. Just not sure if my skills are up to the task!

I really think that what you will most happy with is simple out-line quilting... go around the objects, both pictorial and stitch-in-the-ditch. It is a beautiful quilt and it doesn't need a lot of fancy squiggles or another design to make it shine! Enhance the design by sewing the outlines, it will make the objects in the center panel pop and the rest of the quilt stands on its own two feet (so to speak).

I designed the sas layout for this quilt in a class with Wendy Mathson, who is a GREAT teacher btw. However I got the panel from Tracey Brookshier and was inspired by her quilt pattern called Crane Moon. Here is a link to her quilt: http://www.traceybrookshier.com/patt...aneMoon362.jpg

Quiltchen 01-16-2013 10:22 AM

Very pretty!

COYOTEMAGIC 01-16-2013 08:54 PM

I'm not a "Master" quilter, I'm a pretty good beginner, but on a quilt like this (BEAUTIFUL) I think the quilting itself needs to be minimal to allow the beauty of the pattern and fabric to come through. I would stitch in ditch around the bigger squares then follow the curves of the pattern itself, finishing with the rolling hills in the center panel

BrendaK 01-16-2013 11:21 PM

WOW, that is awesome. Be sure to show us when it is quilted. BrendaK

Beautiful quilt! I have that same Asian fabric in my stash, love what you did with it!

I agree with several suggestions here about simple quilting. I am trying to decide about the sky area in the panel. should I do more quilting (such as echo) to flatten that area and make the cranes stand out more, or just do a similar amount of quilting as with the rest of the quilt?

I like your quilt better than the one in the link! As for quilting the panel, I would follow some of the waves, around the "moon," the 3 big cranes and enough of the smaller ones to balance. Really gorgeous quilt!
