I thought I'd post this topic to see what everyone's most complicated quilt block was? I've got a picture of mine posted here...it may be small potatoes for some of you quilting gals, but this is quite the accomplishment for me. I'm proud of that...I was aiming for a 9'' block and it's 8 1/2''... oh well...

Anyway, tell us what your most complicated one was!

Janeen 09-22-2008 06:50 PM

a very nice patience corner there...

Moonpi 09-22-2008 07:17 PM

Nice. Now, measure your seams and see how far off each seam is from 1/4"- that will help you judge where you need to be for your next one. All 1/4" feet are not true to size, and we do not always stitch accurately (speaking strictly for myself).

SaraSewing 09-23-2008 10:33 AM

You did really well with Patience Corners. I had that one in my "like it" folder, and now I"ll put a note that it was a bugger for you.

The worse one I've done is a Card Tricks http://mccallsquilting.com/qb/pattern_902/index.html

I had my fabric all picked out, and made this sample blocks, and decided that one was enough for me!

Yikes! That Card Trick has to be the worst one I have ever done also! I got so frustrated and upset doing just one block that I never did another one lol. I have that single block pinned up on my sewing room wall as a reminder not to do another one!

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 09-23-2008 12:29 PM

I'm not even finished the block yet, because I started something else at the same time, but this is what it's going to look like, only in REDS.
Oh ya, and my camera is dead so I can't take pics of the real thing till I get my camera working again.

Mine is not realy one block but the whole quilt.

SaraSewing 09-23-2008 01:14 PM

Quilt4You: The braid is fantastic, but I agree it isn't easy to do. I just did one for the edging, and it was a bugger. I'll be posting photos soon, but It's on my list of "never do again" things. Your whole quilt is sure pretty!

zyxquilts 09-23-2008 01:33 PM

I think Card Tricks was the most frustrating block I've done. As for complicated, I'd say the Pineapple block, Mariner's Compass & Storm at Sea are tied.

mrsj82 09-23-2008 01:45 PM

Wow, then I'm on the low end of complicated! lol But for me, it's a huge accomplishment. Thanks for sharing, I love learning from experience!

Saravincent,

I know what you mean. I did one called Card Trick. Looks just like that. I was going to do a 5 x 4 and ended up with only 9.

But this was NOT my most complicated block.

Several of these could qualify though.

don't feel dwarfed. the most complicated blocks for me are plain old checkerboards. every little gafarble sticks out like a sore thumb.

someday, somebody else will ask the same question and you'll whip out a pic of something that will knock your own socks off. it's just a matter of time, practice and determination.

second most complicated. first on the list of blocks i will NEVER do again. LOL

johnette 09-29-2008 06:12 PM

Wow, they are all beautiful. Excellent job, friends. My goal is to someday post a picture on this thread. Don't think I've done anything too compicated yet.

mary quite contrary 09-29-2008 06:22 PM

Complicated or not I like the pictures. Thanks for sharing.

mrsj82 09-29-2008 06:45 PM

Those are absolutely great! I will someday get to that point...as of right now the patience corner is kicking my tuckus. That and my sewing machine needle broke this afternoon and I have to wait for a paycheck to replace it...boo!!!

The Spider Star was the trickiest for me.

That spider star is beautiful. Was it paper pieced?

Thank you. It was just regular pieced together, not paper pieced. I don't think I'll be doing it again either. LOL

Jbennett975 12-10-2023 06:09 PM

Why was the braid so difficult?

Karamarie 12-11-2023 06:16 AM

I'm not good at figuring out something like that anymore. Could be that I'm looking at turning 80 within a year. It looks good to me and would like to see the quilt you make with it.

I tried the card trick block before rotary cutters and rulers. what a hot mess that was. Now I have tools and starch and know what half square triangles, split quarter square triangles and a center quarter square triangle and it's easy as pie.

I thinnk the block I spent the most time doing (8 hours according to my DJ journal) was the center block in the dear jane quilt Pappa's Star. I made three before I called it good enough. 4.5" finished, the center star was about an inch I think. But it made a better quilter out of me :) If we don't try, we can't succeed. (not my block, just grabbed it from google)

toverly 12-11-2023 06:46 AM

Cleopatra's fan. No photos because I threw the mess away. Tried it with free templates. Someone recently posted the plastic templates on FB. Yikes. It brought back the struggle of all those curves.

Julienm1 12-11-2023 05:39 PM

Double wedding ring! OMG!!! have to be organzed. So muh swearing. So much crying. Seam riper..wore it out. Determined to master it and ened up making three with scrappy color way.

While looking through my quilts folder for a complicated block picture, I found two that were difficult. The hearts quilt was done many, many years ago when I had no one to advise me. I appliqued hearts on the 4 huge blocks. The mandala seashell covers one whole wall in my workroom. 100 squares per block.

sewbizgirl 12-12-2023 02:15 PM

My nemesis is flying geese in a line, on the diagonal. I avoid them like the plague. But now that I have a nifty Creative Grids ruler for geese, I might try again. Might.

Lena1952 12-13-2023 05:12 AM

Mine was a crazy quilted Christmas stocking. I just can't do crazy! Well I can but not when I'm quilting. LOL I don't have it to post a pictured because my sister thought it was the best thing ever and asked for it. I happily sent it home to live at her house.

RedGarnet222 12-13-2023 11:00 AM

I would say any block with lots of bias edges to match up. Those are tricky little buggers.

osewfast 12-16-2023 09:18 AM

My most difficult/complicated block was this feathered star. It's wonky, and lacks 'perfect' points - but it was a fun learning process and its the center of a much larger UFO project. =)
Paper Piecing is another personal challenge for me. Nope - don't like it & avoid it. =)

Definitely sewing this quilt with diamond shaped pieces. The whole quilt was Y-seams. A real nightmare...never again!

pennyhal2 01-02-2024 01:32 PM

Card Tricks for me too! Once I mastered that, the rest seemed easy...with a little patience!

Hey look at that, a moldy thread that is actually fun to go back to read and post updates! 😆

Mine was a Judy Martin log cabin variation that I made with much love for my MIL in 2009. Each block had 76 pieces in it, I made it king-sized, 11 blocks by 11 blocks. That's 9196 patches, if you're counting.

Sad story - I recently found out my MIL has given every quilt I've ever made for her away to people I don't know. The last time my husband and I visited, this log cabin was no longer on her bed. My husband poked around everywhere looking for it - he looked in closets, under beds, in boxes, in storage, etc. It's gone. I told him it doesn't matter anymore, I don't care if it's gone. I wouldn't want it back because just looking at it would remind me of how hurt I was.

For those of you who will chide me for being upset about it and tell me that once a quilt is gifted, the owner can do what he/she likes with it - this is true. BUT. She gets me to make these beautiful quilts for her (yes, she has specifically asked me to make quilts for her, picked out the pattern, fabric, etc) then enjoys getting all the kudos and admiration from people when she gifts the finished product to them. The time and love I put into HER quilts do not matter to her at all; what she likes is the attention SHE gets when she gives my work product away. Burns me up. And no, I will not make any more quilts for her and I told her that to her face.
