I just got the pictures out of my camera :) Each DGK chose his/her own fabric out of a choice of nearly 30 pieces. The baby was genuinely delighted to find the dragonfly fabric in the stash. You might notice that the paisley hand seems backwards, but that is because she is left-handed like her mother. On the back of wall hangings, I normally put split sleeves to put a stick through... generally, a bamboo skewer from the kitchen is large enough. This way, the work can be hung from a center 'nail' or a ribbon tied to the ends to hang. I'm not happy that the pen bled so much in writing the label. My picture is sewn to the corner of the label. In appliqueing the hands, I already layered the quilt so the blanket stitch becomes part of the quilting. I sewed the binding to the back and blanket stitched it to the front, a first try with this method.

What a great idea-when my children were too small to write their name, I would trace their hands on cards to grandparents--when my son wrote a thank you note to his grandma for his college graduation present, he traced his hand then wrote the note on the palm-so cute!

Latrinka 05-07-2012 05:06 AM

Awe, it's too precious, what a special gift!

Such a clever idea! It reminds me of being back in grade school (back in the Stone Age) & making our Moms hand-print gifts. Does anybody else remember that or am I the only one?

I realy like your wall haging and it has given me inspiration for a quilt I must design for a day care center. The class is the "Busy Hands" class and I was doing hands from solid colors, but your patterned fabric brings such vibrancy and creativity to the priject.

I remember that vividly! I was walking home from school with it in my mittened hands; dropped and broke it :(

What a great idea!!!! I think i'll make one for myself with my two precious kids hands. I've always loved having their hand prints as they grow. They're 15 & 13 now so i better get all the hand prints i can!!!!!

ljptexas 05-10-2012 05:02 PM

It is adorable!! Some yrs ago I got my 7 GK to do their hands, cut them out of different color foam & used as a border in the playroom. Still have the hands but of course they are soooo big now. That room is now my sewing room. Was thinking of using 1 of each to put up on a small wall. Even outling on a t-shirt.....

joyce888 05-10-2012 06:19 PM

Great gift and keepsake.
