By modified puffs I have taken the top fabric and then purchased some cheap solid color fabric and cut them both the same size. I run the square off on my sewing machine, after having cut a slit in the solid back fabric that allows for fiber filling. I use Poly-fil, which is very light and airy.
I sew the top fabric and the bottom inside out and when sewn all the way around, I turn them back through the slit that I had made. I then join the blocks in a row and then join the rows. I do the joining by hand and use an overcast stitch.
When the whole quilt is done I turn it over and stuff all the little squares and I use iron on tape. I cut the tape the size of the opening in each square and then just iron them and peel the tape off the back and presto the slits are now covered.
I then do my backing and leave a little excess to work with and then hand sew on the binding.
