Right before we went on vacation, I finished the quilt for my Dad! Well, I actually finished it on the airplane  !

He graduated from the Naval Academy and my parents attend tons of Navy football games through the season, so I made him this quilt in the Navy colors with appliqued USNA in the center - with a warm flannel backing!

He was surprised and speechless when I gave it to him at the beach, which is rare for him, especially after the traditional "first-night-on-the-beach" beers he had drank!!

Now, my projects include the URR quilt (saved as PDF) that I designed using a EQ5 template and the International Round Robin center that I am fabric shopping for in about 20 minutes!

Off to shop!

PDF file - I accidently deleted the sketchbook copy of the quilt with all the colors, so here is the one with MOST of the colors, but not all!

Love your father's quilt!!

Moonpi - that is certainly a different version of the URR's on here. I like both. Sailboat is not that in your version.

What a wonderful quilt for your dad! I'm sure it brings back many memories of the service.

mamatobugboo 09-03-2008 01:13 PM

Thanks everyone for your kind words!! It is as much fun to see people's reactions to their quilt gifts as it is to make them - well, ALMOST as much fun!!

There are a lot of navy families on the Board!

FYI - the pattern can be found here (which includes the templates for the letters): http://www.villagequiltshoppe.com/de...TOKEN=45011345

And the letters can be found free at this link as a PDF file, if you want to use your own pattern: http://www.quiltmaker.com/webextras/lettersmain/

The original pattern was in the September/October 2001 issue (#81) of Quiltmaker magazine if anyone holds onto their magazines that long!!

happy quilting!!! :D

Kyiav10 09-04-2008 07:07 PM

Great quilt. I see why he loved it.

Question though. How were you able to take needles onto the plane. I thought that was a no no? Maybe they changed some things now.

jbsstrawberry 09-04-2008 07:16 PM

Ohh Dad's quilt is AWESOME!! You did a fantastic job!!! No wonder he was speechless!!

Feathers 09-08-2008 08:15 AM

Wow! What a wonderful, thoughtful gift. I'm sure your dad and mom LOVE it. The flannel will give them lots of nice, comforting warmth while watching the games or while snuggling on a cold winter's night. Thanks for sharing.
