I don't know what I was thinking! I pieced a quilt for my parents and decided to try to FMQ feathers all over the quilt top. I've only FMQ feathers on borders of small baby quilts. My machine only has 5 1/2 inches of work space. Some areas look Ok & others look more like the Lochness monster than a feather hook. This has worn me out, but I'm too far in to stop or take it out. My husband says I'm crazy that it looks fine, but I just don't know. How do you think it looks. I'm going to take a break & not touch it until tomorrow...maybe it will look better to me.

Maggie_Sue 02-10-2011 05:31 PM

I think you are doing a wonderful job, rest a bit tonight and forge ahead!! Will watch to see the finished quilt!

the casual quilter 02-10-2011 05:32 PM

Your husband is only half right. It looks great and you are not crazy. It truly does look fine and your folks will love it. We all do this to ourselves by being so critical of our work. Congrats on a great job.

Challys 02-10-2011 05:32 PM

I think it looks pretty but I have yet to be brave enough to even try FMQ so my opinion maybe doesn't count!

luvstitches 02-10-2011 05:35 PM

Keep going because when the quilt is complete, you'll like it.
I'm quilting a quilt right now and I'm not liking it at all.
I actually had to take a break and visit the QB. I know when it's finished and I pull it back out at Christmas, I'll like it again.
Your quilt looks fine...keep going.

Lucymae 02-10-2011 05:37 PM

You see all the mistakes. Others won't. it looks great to me. I can't even do that yet. Keep on,, :-D :-D

shawnemily 02-10-2011 05:39 PM

That is beautiful! Dont be so hard on yourself!! Your parents will love it!!

CompulsiveQuilter 02-10-2011 05:42 PM

Are you KIDDING???!?!?! It looks great! A galloping horse won't see it, and neither will your parents. Hold your head high and be proud that you even attempted such a difficult task. And my bet is you learned something along the way - for me, that's what "better" quilting is; learning.

shemace2901 02-10-2011 05:46 PM

relax, it looks great and your parents will love it. I do understand how you feel, we always are more critical of our own work. Ask yourself this "If my best friend quilted this what would I tell her?"

MYWR 02-10-2011 05:46 PM

Wish I could make something that pretty! It looks great. You are your worst critic. I tink it is beautiful

Cherylsea 02-10-2011 05:48 PM

#1 It's a beautiful quilt
#2 Are your parents Certified Quilt Police?
If the answer to #2 is "No" then I bet they will be thrilled that you made them a quilt and won't see a thing wrong with it.
You may be the forerunner in a new quilting style!!

k9dancer 02-10-2011 05:51 PM

Just keep at it. When it's finished, you will see it in a better light.

PamQuilts 02-10-2011 05:56 PM

It looks wonderful. Don't give up. Once it's all finished it will look different to you. It's going to be beautiful. Why are we so hard on ourselves? But, I understand, because I'm the same way! :)

ElizH 02-10-2011 05:57 PM

It looks great to me!

I wish I could machine quilt like that. I slowly hand quilt mine. I average one a year.

sewingsuz 02-10-2011 05:58 PM

It does look wonderful. You should be proud of what you have accomplished.

sueisallaboutquilts 02-10-2011 06:21 PM

I think it looks beautiful!! But glad you are calling it a night- we all need that sometimes.
Can't wait to see it finished! :D

Stitchnripper 02-10-2011 06:23 PM

I think you are doing a wonderful job.

grammyto2 02-10-2011 06:24 PM

practice practice pratice, everyone had to start somewhere, you keep going, it looks great.

Debbie B 02-10-2011 06:29 PM

Thanks for everyone's kind words. Your words of encouragement were just what I needed. I really like doing the FMQ...I just need a bigger work space. 5 1/2" makes it hard work...ha. I can hear that sit down Handi Quilter (Sweet Sixteen) calling my name. Just don't have the money, but someday.....

shellyD 02-10-2011 06:31 PM

It looks great. Take a break. My first free motion I sewed thru my finger. The quilt had my blood sweat and tears in it. I always tell my kids the quilt is made with love not perfection and that it represents my arms around them when I am not there. I told that to my parents also when I made them quilts. So dont worry about it. They will love it, we are our worst critics and see little imperfections. They won't. Get a good night sleep and continue on with the love.

ergranny46 02-10-2011 06:38 PM

That's beautiful. I am too mich of a coward to even try.
I think you are doing a great job.

blossom808 02-10-2011 06:38 PM

I think it looks pretty...we all hardest on ourselves....

sewbizgirl 02-10-2011 09:36 PM

Looks like it's coming along great. I have to take LOTS of breaks while FMQing, myself. It's still new enough to me to make me really tense.

jemma 02-10-2011 10:58 PM

keep going it looks grreat

Annaquilts 02-10-2011 11:30 PM

It looks better then fine it looks great. I must agree with your husband on this one. I do FM too and mine doesn't look anything as nice as yours. Definitely take breaks and spread the work. It is hard on your body especially a larger quilt.

cathylynn 02-11-2011 12:01 AM

definitely keep going! love the pattern and colors.

BizzieLizzie 02-11-2011 12:08 AM

I see a beautiful quilt with some fantastic quilting! May not look like you intended it to but no one is going to know that.It could be a pattern that you have made up as you got started with the quilting.Looking forward to seeing it as a finished quilt.

Don't be so hard on yourself - it is terrific.

fabric lover 02-11-2011 04:25 AM

It's great. Don't think of it as 'wrong' feathers, but as free quilting.
Good luck with the rest of the quilt.

Laura3 02-11-2011 05:19 AM

Looks amazing to me...and I love the colors!

Tweety2911 02-11-2011 05:41 AM

Beautiful quilt and so is your quilting.

Matilda 02-11-2011 05:47 AM

You are doing a beautiful job quilting this gorgeous quilt! Keep going!

Lindybug 02-11-2011 05:57 AM

I agree with everyone else. It's great!
You're looking at the details, whereas your parents will see it as a whole.
And if the shapes aren't exactly as you wanted them, no one else needs to know. - Unless you point it out to them. Which you won't, OK, no matter how great the temptation :)

M.I.Late 02-11-2011 10:30 AM

If you keep doing this - it will get better and better. It looks fine to me and they will love it. Persevere! Knowing you did all the quilting will make them appreciate it even more. When you become nearly perfect you can look at that and remember what that experience was like... Love it!

Mariposa 02-11-2011 10:33 AM

You aren't crazy! The quilting is great, so keep going! You will like it when all done. :)
