I have the blocks made for a log cabin quilt for my sister, and now I need help deciding on a layout. She has narrowed it down to these two options, and so I'm posting the pictures of both to solicit opinions on which one looks best with the colors I've used.

So, please vote:
Diamond pattern, or zigzag?

Quilt As You Go - you have each block already made with the backing, batting, and block.

Well, the original idea was from a quilting show. The lady demonstrated how to sew each additional piece on the log cabin onto the first piece with the backing underneath, the batting in the middle, and you sewed the layers all at once. It was a royal pain in the butt! I kept tangling the batting, couldn't get the blocks straight, etc.

So, I switched methods and made just the top log cabin blocks normally, and then sandwiched all the layers and quilted them one block at a time. Now I have individual quilted squares that I can arrange and rearrange until I am happy.

If I do the diamond pattern, my next problem is what to do for the border. The diagonal pattern won't care what I use for an edge, it's going to look good anyway.

I am in the middle of the same log cabin as you are. I am making it for my daughter. It has over 90 fabrics in it! Each fabric represents an aspect of her life. I showed her the blocks, planning to go the zig-zag route and she twisted them and turned them until she got the diamond shaped one! She LOVES it as diamonds. I think it looks harder, more elegant, more "wow". I have to iron it, put a border on it and bind it. She can't wait to get hold of it! Good luck with yours!

grammyp 06-01-2010 04:50 AM

I'm fond of the diamond pattern myself.
