I shared this on the picture boards. Now I am trying to figure out how to quilt it.

1) stitch in the ditch around each block ... easiest

2) Monopoly invisible thread - grid work going on top of the redwork .... would it look okay?

3) free motion around the redwork ..... my FM is okay but this would be a very controlled FM ... hardest

How large are the blocks? If you did stitch in the ditch would it be enough quilting? Would you be happy with it?

I did an embroidery quilt that I did fm around the embroidery, then I quilted a grid in the background (not over the embroidery). It was difficult to do but the results were worth it to me, it really made the embroidery stand out.

Very pretty! Some of it depends too on your batting. The batting will say like 'quilt up to 8 inches'. Your blocks are 9 inches? The monopoly has a slight shine to it. I think the gridwork would be nice in a thread that matches the background. Or even straight diaganol lines just going 1 direction.

Try a search on webshots for 'redwork quilts'. Maybe there's another way. I have a redword SBS top tucked away in a drawer. At least you'll finish it!

you could do free motion or just straight lines starting out from the sashings, 1/4 or 1/2 inch wide. maybe two or three, depending how many you can do around each one. frame them so to speak. great blocks!!

The idea of quilting over embroidery sounds scary to me. Does that work?

I love what you've done with the quilt top and hope you can find a quilting plan that makes you happy.

I think grid work would look fine if you used the invisible thread. Use it in the bobbin too, so the thread doesn't show thru to the top.

I love to FM so that's how I would do it, but go around the embroidery, not on top of it if you FM.

The size of the blocks is one determining factor. SID will work, provided the blocks are not large. One other option would be to place an oval, circle, square or some other geometric shape closely around the redwork, then a 45 or 60 degree cross-hatch from the geometric shape out to the SID in the sashing. Some of the blocks would look best with a square or rectangle. Others would look better with an oval or circle. I would probably use the 60 degree cross-hatching myself. You could use a thread color matched to the background for this.

I dd some redwork years ago and ended up cross-hatching it with hand quilting. They were small projects--wallhanging for my then newborn grandsons. Show us what you came up with.

Several years ago I made a quilt similar to this one. I framed each embroidered square using sashing. I also made several extra squares and put them in frames to hang on the wall. Makes a very nice and different addition to the quilt!!

I've used clear thread to quilt a diamond grid (3" apart) on redwork machine embroidered quilts. Have done some stitching through the redwork and others where I've stopped about 1/4" away from the embroidery. I can program my machine to automaticly tie off the stitches at the start and stopping points so I don't have to back stitch. I've been happy with both methods. Just make sure to use a new sharp needle.
