......but what the heck do I use this for? A friend gave me a whole bunch of this stuff in different colors.

Tippy 04-11-2009 07:39 PM

It's bias binding usually used for finishing seams.. I've used it for hems and dress necklines or armholes that I'm afraid will fray..
I'll be she thought you could use it to bind quilts, but I think those are too narrow. Ahh, the yellow one is a pre-made quilt binding.. so it's wider. still it's only one thickness and there's usually not enough to do a whole quilt in one packet....your call.

henryparrish76 04-11-2009 07:51 PM

Ahhhhh, okay. :)

Moonpi 04-11-2009 07:55 PM

You can also use them for Celtic knot type patterns. Depending on the width, you may be able to adapt stained glass patterns. Have fun with it, play a little!

Oh okay cool :)

purplemem 04-11-2009 08:31 PM

I use it to bind my quilts. If you have all colors the same width, use it just like a scrappy binding. That is so cool, I wish I had a friend like that! :D

What a TERRIFIC idea! I was at a garage sale one year and found a shoe box FULL of this stuff ... as a hunter/gatherer, (hoarder <g>) I couldn't pass up the great deal, but the binding hasn't been disappearing any too quickly. It will now - - if I can remember where I put it <g>
Thanks for posing the question and the suggestions. Such creative minds and hands on this list. !!!

I use binding when I make all my aprons.

key4unc 04-12-2009 01:24 AM

You could also use it as piping under your regular binding. Just place it at the edge of the quilt under your regular binding.

henryparrish76 04-12-2009 04:03 AM

Cool :)

Jerrie 04-12-2009 04:35 AM

You could use it like piping in an inner border.

You can applique stems on your quilts w/those! They make great stems! I too use them around the apron edges! They are fun...Skeat

awesome

RedGarnet222 04-16-2009 08:53 AM

You can make cording from it too! Just buy some cotton cording and enclose it into the bias making sure to get up fairly close to the edge of the cord inside the binding. Wind it up and save it for say, the edge of hand towels you are putting fabric onto or perhaps a apron pocket. Well, pertty much anything you are embellishing.
It just adds that little something that makes it special.

omak 12-06-2009 07:06 AM

DId you ever decide what you would use your binding gift?
<wave>

Ninnie 12-06-2009 07:16 AM

sounds like a lot of great ideas here!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 12-06-2009 07:28 AM

When my daughter's jeans would get to short, I would cut them off into capri pants and run that around the bottom instead of an actual hem. Add some him tape to the top of the pockets, buy a T-shirt in a matching and suddenly it's a cool outfit instead of outgrown jeans.

Great thought. I have a ton of this from when my grandmother passed away. I just got a potholder book and now I have lots of bining ready to go.

BellaBoo 12-06-2009 10:09 AM

I have used it for stain glass quilt blocks. I use a twin needle and sew both sides down at once.

I thought it was a cool idea! You could use the same technique to make just about anything small - checkbook cover, etc. :-D

Sawsan: What a great idea of weaving it!

Could you give a tutorial on how to get started weaving with it???? I know I would appreciate it and I am sure many others on the board would too. :)
