......but what the heck do I use this for? A friend gave me a whole bunch of this stuff in different colors.

It's bias binding usually used for finishing seams.. I've used it for hems and dress necklines or armholes that I'm afraid will fray..
I'll be she thought you could use it to bind quilts, but I think those are too narrow. Ahh, the yellow one is a pre-made quilt binding.. so it's wider. still it's only one thickness and there's usually not enough to do a whole quilt in one packet....your call. |
Ahhhhh, okay. :)

You can also use them for Celtic knot type patterns. Depending on the width, you may be able to adapt stained glass patterns. Have fun with it, play a little!

I use it to bind my quilts. If you have all colors the same width, use it just like a scrappy binding. That is so cool, I wish I had a friend like that! :D

I use binding when I make all my aprons.
|
You could also use it as piping under your regular binding. Just place it at the edge of the quilt under your regular binding.
|
Cool :)

You can make cording from it too! Just buy some cotton cording and enclose it into the bias making sure to get up fairly close to the edge of the cord inside the binding. Wind it up and save it for say, the edge of hand towels you are putting fabric onto or perhaps a apron pocket. Well, pertty much anything you are embellishing.
It just adds that little something that makes it special. |
DId you ever decide what you would use your binding gift?
<wave> |
sounds like a lot of great ideas here!

When my daughter's jeans would get to short, I would cut them off into capri pants and run that around the bottom instead of an actual hem. Add some him tape to the top of the pockets, buy a T-shirt in a matching and suddenly it's a cool outfit instead of outgrown jeans.

I have used it for stain glass quilt blocks. I use a twin needle and sew both sides down at once.
