Well I did sew a small curtain today for the master bathroom. It needed some color in their but something that was still opaque enough. I think you'll like my choice.

And then to my backyard being the haven for the local deer population. They are now constantly tracking thru my yard since the big development is going on behind my house on the next road where they cleared a LOT of land that the deer used to call home. So again this year I am not mowing my backyard so they will have something to eat. ( I border the river anyways so its no big deal if I don't cut the backyard).

The simple curtain I made to bring some color to the master bathroom.

Although it would have been nice had the deer not eaten the rosebush. Ah well.

Lovely curtain Henry! I like that border print :D
And I like your neighbors too. I think it's wonderful of you to leave the back for them to enjoy.

henryparrish76 05-24-2008 08:08 PM

Thanks Sue.
Yea I think it is just sad that all of these animals are being pushed from their homes because of my areas insane need to build up every piece of available land it seems. At least it seems like that to me.

I love your deer pics, Henry. We are building at 2600 feet, lots of oak trees, pine trees, cedar trees, manzanita and of course lots of deer. We buy corn (in 50 pound bags) and feed them frequently. There are several familiar ones that drop by our "yard" and we so enjoy watching them particularly when the babies start showing up. Last summer, I planted big marigolds in a half barrel and felt so smart that the deer didn't touch them. Oh, I enjoyed those flowers and was sure "our" deer knew we feed them and wouldn't bother them.... Yea, right! One night about six weeks after they had been planted, some critter ate every last bloom.....(we still love our deer, even so......)

amma 05-24-2008 09:06 PM

I love the look of your back yard, it looks so natural, no wonder the deer love to come and visit you! Your curtains are very nice :D :D

henryparrish76 05-24-2008 09:22 PM

Thanks Joan. Where do you go to get bags of corn for the deer?

henryparrish76 05-24-2008 09:24 PM

Thanks Amma.

I like that the wildlife come visit my back yard. It is why I keep it as natural looking as possible. There is a small section of it that i do keep cut so the dogs go out back there and me without having to worry about snakes.

Barb M 05-24-2008 09:31 PM

I'm so disappointed...i really thought you were "sewing" a couple of deer, you know, applique deer, quilting, forest scene, etc., but, i truly could not be disappointed, what a gorgeous back yard, to have a forest right outside your door, gorgeous!

henryparrish76 05-24-2008 09:36 PM

oh, LOL
Sorry guess i should have been clearing with the title. my bad.:(:)

and thanks anyways:) hehehe

Barb M 05-24-2008 09:38 PM

hehehe lol had to get ya on that one! lol :)

MissTreated 05-24-2008 10:18 PM

Love the deer in the back yard! We get an occasional moose. My brother always swore he wasn't going to landscape his yard, just put a sign up that says, "Natural habitat preserved for wildlife." Don't think the homeowners' associations would go for it, however. :D

henryparrish76 05-24-2008 11:02 PM

Luckily we do not have a crazy home owners association. To me Homeowners associations are a bunch of crazy people with nothing but time on their hands and nothing but busybody, noisy people ( just my opinion and if any of you are on your homeowner associations board or whatever, forgive me.)

Barb M 05-24-2008 11:04 PM

oh ohhhh LOL LOL lOL!!!!!!!!

tlrnhi 05-25-2008 12:11 AM

I love the curtain!
The deer are nice too!
When we lived in GA, I had them in my backyard. Would toss out the old fruit to them.

Celeste 05-25-2008 12:39 AM

That is a pretty cutain!

Those are beautiful deer to complement the yard. I love the green! This time of year is our brown season.

If you want to talk building, you should see around here! It's all 4 story apartments and I swear they want practically this whole area of S Main St to be that way! My parents have had real estate people sniffing around, hoping he'll retire and let them broker the deal for them. It's so sad. Don't get me wrong, the money will be good, but I know he'd prefer to sell the business and see the hospital go on. Nowadays, the veterinarians are in shopping malls!

I agree about Homeowners associations, and on top of that you have to pay, out here, hundreds of dollars a month in fees!

Bevanger 05-25-2008 05:25 AM

I love deer so I enjoyed looking at your pictures. Your lucky to have such a great yard for them. I really love the curtain too. Great Job!

Knot Sew 05-25-2008 05:34 AM

We are getting deer all over because they are logging and building housing developments all over the mountains. Mason was waiting for the bus at 7 am and deer cross the road a short ways from them. All kinds of wild animals are coming down. I have never seen so many birds and circling hawks. I hope they save some space :D

DonnaRae 05-25-2008 05:50 AM

Love the curtain, but love the deer too. Hey, next time do a deer curtain

Joan 05-25-2008 06:06 AM

Henry, we buy bags of cracked corn at our local feed store. (even the cost of it has just gone up dramatically---we're probably not going to be able to be so generous....LOL) We also have wild turkeys and you just haven't lived until you see a proud mama with all her little ones behind her, sometimes as many as 13. Maybe, I can get a good pic to post this summer.......

The homeowners' association he's in now is even worse. There is a couple there I like to call the "Rosenbergs" as they seem to do nothing other than rat out "infractions" on the convenances. It's pathetic.

However, in another neighborhood close to where he used to live, there were strict rules put up by the association. One of them was the houses MUST be painted an earth tone. So one guy painted his house bright blue. The association pitched a fit, told him he had to repaint his house an appropriate color. He didn't. So they hauled him off to court, where he represented himself. His course of action included a slide projector and screen along with an image of the earth from space. His explanation was that if the earth was over 75% water, and the water appeared blue (the same blue as his house) then it would stand to reason that his house was indeed and "earth tone." He won, he got to keep his house blue and the homeowners' association changed the rules to list specific colors for those in question in the future.

Our only covenant when we bought our house is that we couldn't raise herds of goats.... uh, we are in a culdesac and surrounded by water... uh... okay, I'll try and abide by that rule... sigh.... Henry- you're right... homeowner ass********* are nutjobs...

DA Mayer 05-25-2008 12:14 PM

When my son & daugh in law built they even had to have their house numbers set in the brick on the front of the house. They did have a nice spot across the street from wetlands so saw lots of wildlife. Not as pretty as your backyard Henry. They moved back home and are hoping to buy a small acerage. In north central Iowa we don't have as many areas that look like yours. We live on the edge of a small town and we have deer visit once in a while, wild turkeys like our pond and we have had a blue heron eat all our goldfish. Other wise it is mostly bunnies, frogs, gophers, possum and raccoon. rarely a skunk will visit- thank heavens it is rarely. Love your curtains by the way, are you going to show the bed covering?

My parents bought a house years ago that had only one rule in the 'hood. No sheep. So of course they got one! :D

Oh--good for you for elaving the backyard natural!!

Have you ever read "Crash" by Jerry Spinelli? It's a kids' book--the first read aloud I do every year. You'll love the little sister character. Read it if you get a chance.

DreamXer 05-25-2008 07:11 PM

I like the curtain you made - nice job!
I like the deer in your backyard as well. We get all kinds of wildlife here too, we live in the country. The last two years, we got black bears that "investigated" the chickens. I walked in on one once, it had smashed through a window in the chicken shed - just a small one who was curious, but enough to scare the bejeebers out of me and out of the chickens! Knock on wood, the bears haven't come by (yet?) this year... but they may in summer when they try to fatten up for winter and the berries are all gone. Of all wild animals that I've met, a black bear is the scariest...
We have skunks too, but for some reason they don't spray us - they just waddle away.
Oh, on the very cute side, a baby bunny did find its way into the chicken shed today! It was very very cuddly looking! Don't worry, it found its way safely out!
One of the garden centres in our area sells the corn in 50lb bags - they call it deer food or chicken scratch - so maybe you could find it there.

henryparrish76 05-25-2008 11:07 PM

I will look for that at the library Karla. :)

henryparrish76 05-25-2008 11:07 PM

Thanks janet:)

About the home owners Asso's, I told my husband the same thing exactly. He wants to look at lots out west of Missoula where some home owners are dividing larger lots to sell. They are still a fair size, but I told him absolutely no Associations . I refuse to give money to a bunch of busy boddies who feel they are being paid to interfere in my business. Love the deer. We are next to a railroad yard, a bus garage and an overpass, and effectively sheltered from visits by deer. Which is why we would like to move outside of town in the first place.

henryparrish76 05-26-2008 12:50 PM

I hear ya Susan! :)

henryparrish76 05-26-2008 02:30 PM

Here in NC we can feed them corn, or let our grass and shrubs feed them, hence the natural look to my backyard.

amma 05-26-2008 02:48 PM

I live in a small town, and we have deer walking through all year long as well as all of the usual smaller animals. Last year we could see where a cougar was tracking a deer right through our parking lot. We followed their foot prints in the mud all the way around my apartment complex....no more taking the garbage out after dark for me

henryparrish76 05-26-2008 04:24 PM

oh defintely not. As we encroach more and more into animal territory and take away the ancestral hunting grounds more and more animals will make their presence known in our suburbs etc... People really make me mad when they kill animals fro following their instincts. We take over their land and drive them into situations where they eat our cattle and sheep but then kill them for doing what comes naturally to them.

Animals were here first not humans....but we humans act like everything is ours and then we punish the animals for being animals.

Okay I'll step off my soapbox now.

ania755 05-26-2008 05:11 PM

very lovely ....
