Painter's Canvas Drop Cloth Morphs into Quilted Rug
1 Attachment(s)
The canvas drop cloths make wonderful curtains, drapes, etc. Why not a rug? Thought I'd give it a try. Just sewed a tube with one layer of batting (leaving both ends open), turned, quilted, and fringed the ends. Looks pretty good; hope it wears as well!

Interesting. I like the finished look, and the idea, but have to say, white on the floor would never fly in my house full of men! Good job!
clever idea and nicely done

Just terrific, great job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
How unique. Nicely done.

Love the idea:) It's got the old wheels turning~just think of the possibilities. If you don't like the white....paint it:)
Oh dear. Another item on my "to do" list. What a neat rug and idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great job of upcycling.

Very nice! I make most of my tote bags from painter's canvas which I purchase at Lowe's or Home Depot (don't get the plastic backed stuff!). It machine embroiders really well, no puckering from dense designs, and wears like iron. I've never thought of quilting it, but I'm going to try that next! thanks for the tip.
ETA, Oh, I just had another thought. i wanted to make some picnic quilts. I think I'm going to try using the canvas as a backing. |
Awesome! It should wear like iron and it looks so comfortable to stand on.

Wow, I am impressed! What a beautiful job you did of it. I think I will have to get some painters drop cloths just to see what I can come up with. Your rug is lovely and just like you, I think it will wear very well. I can also see painting on the cloth before using it. Maybe taping it off to make a plaid design. Lots of ideas swimming in my head...thank you so much for sharing.

Update on Painter's Canvas Drop Cloth rug...
Well as usual, one idea breeds another---love the idea of painting on the canvas. That made me think of finding a painter who would part with an 'experienced' drop cloth with paint on it---that could be fun also. Also thought of tea/coffee dyeing (sp?) a dark beige. We also have a dog---Sally, the black lab, who sheds enough hair in a week to make a whole new dog. Guess what? The hair vacuums off like magic with a regular vacuum brush for bare floors. The rug has been 'in service' for about 4 days now, and it's very 'cushy' and just stiff enough to stay flat. I've already made another and will make more. Would love to see pictures if anyone decides to expand on the idea!

Love your idea. I made canvas floor cloths years & years ago and they did wear like iron. I like this idea and have many ideas for painting on the cloth first then quilt. Project list is growing!!
Definitely an inspiration! Did you use a special needle or different thread when you did the quilting?
Very cool! Love the look! Think I'll try this! Thanks for the great idea!
Wonderful idea, needlefruit! Been trying to figure out how to update my plaid couch. Think your rug would look good on the back of my couch before I put the quilt over the back. You rule!
I bet that'll be here long after we're all gone. That canvas wears like iron. Great idea. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing.
It looks like a good way to practice quilting as well as being a lovely rug!
Good Job BOB
Great idea-and a good job making your canvas rug. Maybe a good way to learn how to FMQ!
Please give us a little more info on how you did this.
Is it quilted on a LA or HSM? ( long arm or home sewing machine?) Thread and needle size? Was the canvas hard to quilt being a heavier material? Did you wash the canvas first? I really like your idea and think winter curtains would be really cool and I could practice different stitches on them. Thank for sharing this. peace |
Looks very good. What a great idea. And if you didn't want the white (that would be difficult for my home to) you can always dye it or paint it, then quilt it. Thanks so much for sharing.
Clever! May have to copy you!
That is such a cool idea!!! You can paint them, quilt them with funky designs, used colored thread on them so they stand out...oh goodness. I think they would last a long time with the canvas. You could use denim also to change it up...or maybe even home dec fabric(I might try that first, I have a bunch and it will coordinate with my kitchen perfectly).
My you are so clever. Really looks great. Bet it will hold up really good.
Clever and beautiful! I love the idea of getting a used one....which then opens up a whole lot of possibilites for rugs/wall hangings with a fantastic modern art feel. Hmmm, must speak to my nephew who is just finishing his apprenticeship in painting and decorating.....
I love re-purposing items! Good job, and good for you. :)
Thats pretty ingenious and looks great. It would be toooooo fun for kids to be able to actually paint on it and make a special rug for their rooms!!! This opens the door to many many fun ideas! You've now inspired me!! Thanks...
Great idea!
Great job and great idea! Brings me to a few years back when I purchased a HUGE package of painter's canvas and made slipcovers for my daughter's sofa and two chairs! She's still using them - they launder beautifully and get softer with wear!
How creative! I love your idea! :)
Thanks so much for sharing! |
Oh my gosh, I love it!
