Judy Rothermel's Aunt Grace Centennial Solids was the original inspiration for this piece but got carried away with the colors. Replaced her periwinkle with my turquoise and wanted to do something in blue the day I started this quilt. You know what that's like! Hope you like my little mini. (31" square).

Also, I've had more fun recently with this WIP I just call "grab a scrap." I started with 2.5" squares and just grab anything and go around it log cabin style. It's done in 15 min.!! Then I decided to put a row of white around each block and finish it off with another row of different colored prints for a true scrappy feel. In the first picture, I just laid out 6 blocks together before they get the row of white on and I really like they way they look and think it would be better done this way. I just may split this into 2 different scrap quilts as it goes really fast and the scraps keep multiplying!! lol. Will post a final pic when finished! :-D

Next the blocks get a row of white and look like the foreground pics. Back row shows the final block.

I really like the second one for using up scraps. No real preplanning. I have so many scraps of different sizes and shapes. Did you do these on a foundation?

leatheflea 07-24-2010 01:02 PM

I love the scrappy they feel so homey! Great quilts

I do too! I love this method!! It goes fast! No, I use absolutely no foundation as there's no need to. The process is: add a scrap, square it up and repeat. That's it! I already have sorted out into 3 different bags: small, skinny and short strings in bag 1. In bag 2, marked medium strings, are all medium length and width strips. In bag 3, are long, wide and big strips (nothing over 2" in any of the strips). All 2.5" pieces go into piles of 2.5" lengths for crumbs, to be cut in squares, etc. I've made 4 string lap quilts and got tired of that so like the log cabin style piecing better. Plus, it gives it a better look I think. If you have all diff. sizes, just add the piece to your ctr. block of 2.5" or whatever you start with and then square it up to whatever size you want. I just started adding approximately 1" pieces but then started adding 2" pieces. Pay no attn. to color or size. Do one block log cabin style and the other block courthouse steps style. It will work great! Can't wait to see what you make using this method!! Be sure and post pics for us to see! I like these "no brainers."

I love the pinwheel quilt. It's just so pretty and scrappy. The log cabin one is going to be so cute. Great job on both and thanks for sharing.

I love the pinwheel. And as I study it, I can see some terrific ideas for value placement from my scrap heap.

I just love to see other people's work. It is just so inspiring. Another thing I love about it is seeing how many of the fabrics shown I recognize from my stash.

The log cabin looks great with the white frame around it. I like that idea, also the notion that the "requisite" red is not REALLY required and we can still call it a log cabin block.

Yes, the pinwheel block offers a rewarding look with scraps because of the blades and triangles! Since you like pinwheels so much and love to see others' works, you really need to look at my first Pinwheel quilt I posted. It too has a great scrappy look and I carefully selected fabrics for that mini using lots of vintage fabrics that were my favorites. Here's the link to the first Pinwheel quilt called Pinwheel Chaos:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-41993-1.htm

Yes, the fact that the requisite red is missing, gives it an interesting look. I personally love the "large hearth" of the 2.5" ctr. rather than the typical little red square. The most fun is just using what I have on hand, slicing the end off and adding another piece without being careful the logs are all the same! I just love this quick way of assembling a log cabin style block.

I'm getting ready to do another Pinwheel but this time I won't paper piece it like I did with this one, but I will use the "lay it on top of each other" method to do the half-split half-square triangles. Let me know if you need this method. Will be glad to show you how it's done. It will make piecing a Pinwheel Quilt a piece of cake. And yes, the value placement is so much fun with this block!

Thank you soooo very much, gingerella, and I look forward to seeing your Pinwheel quilts one day! I hope you are inspired after seeing my little minis!

I love that pinwheel! I may try that for my next one. I think I have enough leftovers to make a coordinated scrappy pinwheel. Your 2nd one is very interesting to me. I like how you framed each piece in white and then one more go-round. I'm beginning to think scrappies are my favorites. Yours are beautiful!Good job- thanks for posting.

Thank you so very much, himnherr!! Let me know if you don't have enough for a pinwheel. I'll be glad to share some scraps with you! Yes, I decided to frame the log cabins to set them apart while at the same time it's an excuse to use up a huge supply of light/white fabrics. I just had to start using them in some way. Then I love the idea of a final print frame so it's really scrappy. It should turn out good and be a large lap quilt for donation. I sure do hope scrappies are your favorites!! Some of the best unplanned ideas in quilts are scrappies! Thank you so much for your nice compliments and I hope you've been inspired to create your own great scrappy for all to enjoy!!
