This little quilt was all paper pieces. It had a gabillion pieces. I don't think I'll be making this one again! ;) But I'm happy with the way it turned out. It was a bit of a bugger to quilt because there were soooo many seams that came together. Just had to take my time. :)

lin 04-27-2008 01:04 PM

Sorry, that first pic is sorta bright and washed out. I've got to learn how to take better pictures. LOL

thimblebug6000 04-27-2008 01:07 PM

That is absolutely gorgeous, one lucky Sis!

Moonpi 04-27-2008 01:18 PM

Sure is pretty!

Celeste 04-27-2008 01:24 PM

Another gasp, lin! I cannot imagine all the effort it took to get it together!
My first thought was, how did she find all those different colors?!?!

lin 04-27-2008 01:31 PM

Thank you ladies. :)

Celeste, I think you have to have 7 different fabrics in one color from dark to light, and 7 of another contrasting color dark to light, and then the background fabric. I used all batiks except for the background.

The pattern was developed by a woman who works in one of our local quilt stores. She gave classes on this quilt and sold the pattern locally to the different quilt stores around the area. I'm not sure if the pattern is available anywhere else.

mgshaw 04-27-2008 01:36 PM

WOW!!!! That is wonderful! I have never tried paper piecingand after seeing that gorgeous piece of work I have got to say I am totaly intimidated, all those seams!

Izy 04-27-2008 02:10 PM

Your quilt is simply outstanding - hats off to you for having the dedication to complete this

Love absolutely everything about it, the colours are amazing, what a great way to showcase batiks...I just LOVE batiks!!! (And more frustratingly, I was in Bali a couple of years ago...BEFORE I discovered patchwork    )

lin 04-27-2008 02:16 PM

Thank you mg and Izy. :)

mg~not all paper pieced quilts are made from so many sections. There are tons of patterns out there that are far less intimidating and very doable. I've seen your work. You could do this technique with your eyes closed! :D

Izy~now that's just an awful shame. To be right there where batiks are created and not know to buy up everything in sight!!! LOL I too love batiks and had a great time choosing 14 different ones for this quilt. :)

Cathy M 04-27-2008 02:24 PM

I dip to my knees in awe at your work. It took me a HUGE amount of time, fabric, seam rippers, wine and chocolate to just do the current block of the month using the paper piecing method. Truly a work of art :):)

Cathy M 04-27-2008 02:25 PM

Izy- you need to just scoot back to Bali soon :):)

Vicky Navarre 04-27-2008 02:27 PM

That is just beautiful...I have yet to try paper piecing - will put that on my to do list. What do you like most about that technique?

Barb M 04-27-2008 02:41 PM

Wow! Very incredible!

Knot Sew 04-27-2008 02:41 PM

You are just so good.......that is gorgeous..............wow :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

lin 04-27-2008 02:41 PM

Thank you for your kind words Vicki and Cathy.

I love the perfect points you get without really trying. :) I just think it's a very precise technique. For another thing, my blocks always come out the same size when I paper piece. Not so much when I don't. LOL

newquiltertoni 04-27-2008 02:42 PM

Very beautiful! I love the colors. I have never paper pieced, but you make me want to put it on my list of attempts. That is awesome looking. If sis don't like it, you can send it my way.

This is the original pattern. It called for stars in the center, but I thought with the colors I'd chosen, a garden theme would work better for me. Luckily I had a paper pieced flower pattern in the right block size.

lin 04-27-2008 03:04 PM

Thank you very much Barb, Ruth and newquilter. :)

QuiltingTurtle 04-27-2008 03:09 PM

Can you adopt me as a sis?? What a beautiful quilt.!!!

lin 04-27-2008 03:11 PM

Sure QT. And as long as you do the cooking, you can even move right in! LOL
I'd rather be sewing than cooking. You'd think I'd be skinnier.

Dawn Hendrix 04-27-2008 04:28 PM

WOW.. That is just awesome!

SaraSewing 04-27-2008 04:32 PM

That is fantastic! I keep staring at it trying to figure out where the blocks are and still havent quite figured it out!

I will soon be faced with quilting a top with lots of close and overlaping seams. Any tips?

blahel 04-27-2008 09:52 PM

such a beautiful quilt and i cant stop looking at it..

I had to slow it down some and I wound up using a Jeans needle. Batiks can be a bit difficult on their own but add in the amount of bulk from the seams and the Quilting and Sharp needles weren't cuttin it. The thread kept breaking. I also wound up using Isocord thread in the top and Bottom Line thread in the bobbin. They were strong enough for the abuse LOL. I also avoided the very worst of the bulk that was right in the dead center where so many segments met. It was colorful enough that it wasn't noticable.

the [very talented] designer has alternated a public domain block known as a twisted log cabin (among other names) with a star block of the same size. she also took the time to figure out which colors go where to form the ribbons. even if you're lucky enough to have the pattern already built into a quilting program, it would take quite some time to color it in. my hats off to her and to lin for doing the design such beautifaminous justice.

:P :P :P :P

lin 04-28-2008 04:49 AM

Thank you Patrice! And you're exactly right. She said she plugged the twisted log cabin design into her EQ6 program to figure out how she wanted to place the blocks and how she wanted to distribute color. She's made this up in several color ways. I loved her red, black, and white version the best! The many, many seams make this a bit tedious, but truthfully, it's not that hard to construct, just time consuming. It looks more difficult than it is. :)

I admire people who can create patterns like this from block designs. (not my forte :) ) I think our very own Fly_V does that very well!

live2teach 04-28-2008 10:04 AM

Oh, that is gorgeous. I love the colors and the hard work you put into it. You did an amazing job on it!

lin 04-28-2008 01:49 PM

Thanks live2! :D :D

triciasquilts 04-28-2008 03:14 PM

What can I say but WOW!!! Boy I wish I liked to paper piece, but can't stand picking all that paper off when you're done sewing. So very impressed with your quilt!!!
