This is not a quilt made by me, but a quilt made for me. It's five years old, yet every day I look at it and think about the couple who made it and their story. It's remarkable, and I want to share it.

It was made for our wedding by my groom's best friend and his wife. She was not a quilter, and had not made a quilt previously. They are both biologists and were working in the Arctic as our wedding approached. With less than two weeks to the wedding, they managed to get away from work and came home with a load of fabric. Their home was a tiny two-room shack and the sewing machine an old reliable. Every morning they would get up, move furniture, wash the kitchen floor and work the quilt on the floor. He cut while she sewed. Once it was together, they sat side-by-side and tied threads, then pulled the knots into the batting.

They met the deadline. This was an amazing gift, a treasure to unwrap and is a delight to have. When I heard the story of them working on it all day every day so we could have it, my heart was truly touched.
And, by the way, we were married at the end of August, they truly sweated their way through this.

this quilt stays on our bed, winter and summer

I've never seen this block pattern anywhere else. Wish my first quilt looked this good!

its beautful. i can't believe thats their first quilt, it looks like it was made by far more experienced people.

on an interesting side note. i've found that many scientist are artists and take really well to quilting.

i have a PhD in molecular microbiology and specialize in HIV/AIDS research.

What an amazing gift! The story is too good not to share. It looks like a triple Irish Chain. Look at some of those patterns and see if it fits. I don't blame you for keeping it on your bed all year. Thanks for sharing the story and the pictures.
