Here is what I bring for sewing: Projects (pre cut ready to go) Small iron, spray bottle & small pressing surface lots of rulers, olfas and a cutting mat extra bobbins, machine and extra needles small spot light heavy extension cord (usually 2) hand sewing materials, marking pencils, pins our guild gets the hotel to put up sheets on the wall for design boards. I am sure there is more - but wine is essential!! |
LIGHTS! Bring your Ott lights, either the tabletop version or the one on a stand. I've been on tons of retreats and they never have enough lighting in them. I like to bring a small garbage pail (like you would put in a small bathroom) because I'm used to a garbage pail under my sewing machine at home. You might want to bring a mat to put under your machine to help with vibration if you're going to be using the white melamine tables. If you have the room to bring a good size cutting mat, do that as you sometimes have to wait your turn at the common cutting tables. If you have bed risers to raise the common cutting tables, everyone's back will appreciate them!
Bring snacks to share with everyone. Paper plates, bowls and napkins help as well. A name tag is a good idea if you don't know everyone. |
ME, ME, bring me with you!!!!!!!!!!!LOL
|
Labels to put your name on everything or super sharp sharpies to write your name... things do get mixed up accidently and it avoids hurt feelings.
Wet wipes/germix/kleenex for your sewing area. Tylenol, extra glasses or contacts if you wear them Slippers & Robe ( I always forget them ) "Business Cards" with your contact name/number to hand out CAMERA & batteries Chargers for everything Bottle water Map / GPS / Directions / Reservations Pictures of family / projects One Dollar bills & coins Big trash bag because nothing ever fits on the way home back the way you had it. Have fun |
And put you name on everything!! I like to put my name on both ends of my extension cords so when there's 6 cords all plugged into the same surge protector, you know which one to unplug.
|
I usually leave the kitchen sink and other cooking stuff at home. The rest goes with me - LOL!

Personally, I carry everything listed on the class supply lists for the IQA and AQS quilt shows.
Comfortable clothes. Required supplies for any projects you are working on or workshops you plan to attend. For extension cord - take a look at the one on the reel. Not expensive and comes with 4 electrical plug outlets. Surge Protector. Scissors for paper and fabric. Portable design wall. If you have a tin box large enough to hold a pair of 8" scissors then you have something large enough to hold all of your small tools. It can be small enough to be placed on table so that you are not digging for tools when you need them. Pressing mat and small iron. Eraser for marking pencils. Sand Paper Board Masking Tape Office Supplies - Paper, Pens, Stapler and Staples, paper clips. Zip Loc Bags - small and/or one gallon size for scraps, etc. |
Having never been on a quilting retreat (oh the Envy!), I know I would bring too much. But, instincts tell me that one can never bring too much Wine. Or Motrin.
|
chocolate, wine, and red bull cause you want to sew far into the night!

And the users manual for your machine, ask me how I know!!
|
More than enough projects. If you plan to bring one project, I'd bring 3. Never know. Did someone say to bring a camera?
|
when i have participated in these weekend (quilt=camps) i have always received a supply list of what to take and what will be available. i would check with some guild members who participate and see what they recommend. sometimes you don't have to lug your machine along, sometimes they are available...sometimes there are shopping opportunities, other times not...sometimes there are 'special' activities and you need to know what the requirements are so you won't be left out.
|
Be sure to bring your sewing machine's manual, feet, and power cord.
Extra rotary blades Iron cleaner, esp. if you are into applique or do a lot of pressing. The one I go to every year is held in a hotel that puts a fabric table cloth over the tables (the tables are nice, sturdy wood ones - but the wood is kind of rough). Experience has taught me to bring an inexpensive vinyl table cloth to put over the fabric one - makes cleanup easier. One w/ as little pattern as possible so you can see what you are looking for, though! I like to clean up each evening and after lunches. A chair cushion - the one I bring is pretty thick and in addition to providing comfort for the bottom, it raises me a bit. Hope you have lots of fun! Please let us know how it goes. |
A pillow or cushion for your chair..all retreats have terrible chairs!
|
Sounds so fun, I envy you. It's nice to have your stuff cut before you go and then you are ready to sew when you get there. Saves lots of time.
|
Did someone mention extra rotary blades?
Also, you might want to consider doing something outside your regular comfort zone once you get there. It maybe a new technigue that looks very 'doable'. So consider things like applique pressing cloths (actually, I usually use parchment paper), paper cutting scizzors, old rotary blades marked 'paper', basting glue, etc. Think of things you bought in the past but haven't gotten around to using for whatever reason. |

Don't take more projects than you will use in a weekend. You will go home and think that you didn.t accomplish anything. AND you will find other things that you want to do instead. GO project lite. I retreat at least once a month and that is the best suggestion that I know. |
