The first pix is just one I wanted to share. It's the last quilt that momma finished. The next one is a Lady in Waiting -- a Trip Around the World that was pieced by my grandma
the third is one that I pieced and if I ever get it quilted I'm keeping it for myself.

The last quilt mom ever finished. Some of the whites in the pieced blocks is old Bull Durham bags.

What a thrill it must be to have three generations of quilts in your house. I like your dorothy quilt. Very cute.

Yes it is although it the TATW was made by my dad's mom. My mother's mom died when mom was 14 months old. I don't know if her step mom quilted or not--never heard of it if she did.
I've always loved Wizard of Oz so when this fabric came out I had to make the quilt.

OMG-the Trip Around the World is fabulous! 3 generations...wonderful heritage to pass on.

littlehud 03-18-2010 07:11 PM

Those are all beautiful. I love it. Three generations. Great job for all of them. What treasures.

Jim's Gem 03-18-2010 08:49 PM

Very nice quilts!!

rootyr 03-19-2010 01:52 AM

Oh what treasures!

MISHNJIM 03-19-2010 01:57 AM

Beautiful. I have a Wedding Ring from my hubby's Grandmother that is just the top and needs some fixing. I'm so afraid to do anything with it and I know it's gonna be expensive to get it fixed.

butterjoy 03-19-2010 03:32 AM

Wow, that is so nice. You are blessed to have a heritage to carry on!

I have a Lone Star that some lady in Kentucky pieced before I was born. Mom bought 4 of them, one for each of us girls. Unfortunately, mice sometimes got in the old farm house we grew up in. Some of the tiny 2 1/2" diamonds must have been rather tasty to them. There's less than 10 that I need to replace but finding the fabric has been a head ache. I've finally decided to remove some of the good ones and copie them onto Precious Memories. Either that or I may just use fabric that's close to the pattern I need. The other bad thing about it is that the star is surrounded by that old weird 50's green. I can't decide to leave it or to remove it. My oldest sister got blue the next yellow, then pink and I was left with the green.

I just love the quilt your mom made, but I have a question. What are Bull Durham bags?

Bull Durham bags used to be made of white cotton and contained loose tobacco and papers for rolling your own cigarettes. During WWII you could get a nickel bag that had enough tobacco and papers for 5 cigarettes. Mom's big Saturday night out was that her and four other girls from the boarding house that she lived in would each chip in a penny and buy a nickel bag. They'd walk to the town square, smoke their one cigarette for the week then walk home. Each week a different girl got to keep the bag. They'd take the stitching out (but saved it), wash the bag and hang it in the sunlight to bleach out. Then they used it in quilts. It was approximately 2" by 5".

Thank you. The first one is completely hand pieced and hand quilted. The other two won't be. LOL
My mother did beautiful work. Even though her eyesight was extremely poor and she had multiple health problems. She was completely blind in one eye. She was a trooper---she had gorgeous flower gardens and wonderful vegetable gardens.

Oklahoma Suzie 03-19-2010 02:27 PM

all are cute

jljack 03-19-2010 02:28 PM

Love your mom's quilt....it is so elegant looking. Your grandma's quilt is very colorsful and bright. And the Dorothy quilt is so cute.

How exciting to have 3 generations of quilts in your family. A real treasure!!

raptureready 03-19-2010 03:43 PM

I can't wait for my daughter to get interested in it. She already loves fabric and is instrumental in helping me pick colors for different quilts so she's on her way.

Feathers 03-20-2010 05:30 AM

Lovely, one and all. Thank you so much for sharing. Love the colors and Dorothy in Wizard of Oz hasn't changed one iota since I saw her in the movie! Wouldn't it be nice to be ageless! ....on second look, IS THAT DOROTHY?

Love them all. How nice to come from a family of quilters. I'm trying to get all my amily into it. So far my mother has done one and my sister is working on her second one and even my DH just finished his first 2 tops. He is having a blast. He doesn't mind my blocks laying everywhere cause now his is too.

quiltswithdogs 03-20-2010 02:52 PM

How great, that quilting has been enjoyed for 3 generations. When I was ready for a hobby of my own (at age 50!), all my cousins and sister kept trying different interests, none of them staying with one long enough to let me learn it. And none of them ever quilted which is what I've always wanted to do. So here I am all alone but it turned out that since I've stayed with it so happily, I'm famous as the family's quilter and they all want gifts made by me. Still... it would be nice to be able to go over to one of their houses to quilt together.

You were clever to do the Dorothy quilt in sepia tones sort of like the beginning of the movie.

Granny B 03-20-2010 05:05 PM

You're a very lucky lady. The quilts are wonderful.

Rachelcb80 03-20-2010 06:16 PM

Oh my goodness! How wonderful it must be to have your grandmother and mother's work there for you to see everyday. And what amazing works they are!!!

Love your Wizard of Oz too!

zz-pd 03-20-2010 09:50 PM

that is really neat. beautiful. thank you for sharing. Penny

mem123 03-20-2010 10:50 PM

I think I love them all. You're so lucky.

There were 6 of us kids growing up on the farm. Sometimes in the winter we'd be snowed in for a week or so. We used that time to make quilt tops. Even the boys had two quilt tops apiece that they'd made. Mom finished them up when they got married. The boys and my oldest sister no longer quilt, momma and grandma are gone now but the twins and I still quilt all the time. I can't wait for my daughter to get more interested but I don't want to push it on her. She love fabric and making things so she'll come around soon. Today is her 11th birthday.

raptureready 03-21-2010 03:53 AM

Thank all of you so much for your kind and encouraging comments. The Oz quilt was printed in the sepia tones and was meant to be the "before" quilt. This edition of Oz fabrics was called Under The Rainbow. I have some of the later fabrics that are more colorful and I'm trying to design sort of a Snail Trail pattern that would incorporate the Yellow Brick Road (the one in the movie, not the quilt pattern) I'll figure it out one of these days, make it and post it.
Once again, thank you all. It's uplifting to know that others like my quilts as much as I do. I love looking at your's too. It's inspirational.

joannl 03-21-2010 09:15 AM

The quilts are beautiful. Thank you for sharing the Bull Duram story. I've never heard of that before. Wouldn't it be great if stuff still came in the fabric bags?
Jo

shopbelt 03-21-2010 10:28 AM

Wow, Wow Wow... loveing them all! I haven't started my Oz quilt yet. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet since I have pieces from different lines.

Grammie Sharon 03-21-2010 03:31 PM

Very Nice. I have some of the Wizard of Oz fabrics but have not done anything yet. Just cant seem to know how I want to put it together. Any suggestions?
