I know I have mentioned in other posts that my MIL went into the Nursing home a few weeks back and told my sister to clean out her house and divvy up all the stuff....well, being the only one in the family that quilts I got all her sewing supplies and her machine, etc.... that was just the beginning! She also asked if I would tie and bind 8 quilts that she had the tops all done for the grandchildren so I said sure and they were brought over yesterday.

I had no idea what kind of quilt tops she had done ...I DID know that she loved to make polyester crazy quilts and hand embroider and embellish them... well even knowing that, I was still amazed when these were dropped off... here are two photos of the same quilt.. ..one on the bed laid out and a close up of just one of the squares.... the squares are 17 inches and she made each quilt with 4 squares across and 5 down so 20 squares in each quilt... each square has this beautiful hand embroidery work on them!

Knowing that she has 9 grandchildren I asked my sister if she never got around to making the 9th or what? Come to find out the 9th quilt is already completed.... it still amazes me that she did all of these quilts.. apprently within about a 5 year period according to the dates she has embroidered on them.

Wow! That's really pretty. Look at all that beautiful hand work. It was really nice of you to offer to tie and bind all of them. It should be much appreciated!

Country, I do hope you plan to show us more! Is there a reason she liked polyester? I made a blouse out of it the other day and that was some tuff fabric, my machine said wham, wham with every stitch of the hem (3 layers) but it's very pretty.
The quilt is lovely.

I knew you would all be just as amazed as I was....and I WILL try to get some more pics in the next couple of days...

This morning my sister brought me a bag of her old (unused) hankies....Oh!!! Now I get to make a hanky quilt!!! LOL And I got two boxes of beautiful laces, rick rack, etc. so I will be making a crazy quilt sometime in the future as well! But I would like to do mine with silks!

Patsy, you're a lucky lady to have all your mom's goodies to play with. Your mom's quilt is lovely and her grandkids are lucky to have you both to complete such treasures.

Soo pretty - I bet she used poly so it would never fade. The colors all look bright and crisp.

Thanks for sharing.

Well, I know they will be very appreciative....especially one! There were 9 altogether...8 she hadn't finished....my sister brought over the finished one today and I cannot (repeat CANNOT) match what she did for the binding on this quilt! I'm NOT that talented! And I didn't get a chance to get a photo of it today...will try tomorrow...and then you will see what I mean! Oh my! She didn't teach me EVERYTHING she knows! She kept some of it a secret!

ShellyQ 07-31-2007 01:55 PM

That sure is a pretty quilt and what beautiful work in the embroidery. Would really enjoy seeing some more of them :)

Celeste 11-29-2007 11:08 PM

Years ago my MIL made many polyester quilts and you talk about lasting and taking use well. These quilts will last a very long time. Polester was cheap and wide so it was used a lot. I have one she did that was alll small hexagans.
