After my grandpa passed away in May I decided to make wallhangings for each of his children and grandchildren out of his clothes. This is the first one that I am making, and I think it is turning out nice. Only 6 more hummingbirds, and two eagles to go. This is also the first stained glass quilt that I have made, and it is really easy so far.

This is great. You have done such a nice job.

How are these assembled? You have such a nice point on the hummingbird beak.

That's so pretty. I can't believe it's your first effort at stained glass. You're doing an excellent job.

That is absolutely fantastic! You are doing such a wonderful job! What a nice thing of you to do and what a treasure for those who receive them!

That's a very thoughtful gift to pass along. I've never used mixed fabrics when doing the stained glass, have you got wools, polys, cottons all in there? Are you making your own bias or is is premade?

Oh no, that's not 'nice'....that's absolutely exquisite!!!!! Whatever you used for the wings, B-E-A-T-I-F-U-L! The texture it has makes it look like feathers. WOW! Your so good to make these for your family. They will remember both of you when they look at it.

Can I ask where you got the pattern? My sister loves hummingbirds.

Jim's Gem 08-21-2008 08:36 AM

That is gorgeous! I LOVE hummingbirds. My grandma passed away in March and I've been cutting up her clothes and getting ready to make 7 wallhangings for her kids (my aunts and uncles) and her husband. I still haven't decided on a pattern yet. She loved birds, flowers and bees, nature, etc. This would be a great idea. I've never tried stained glass yet. I've always thought about it. This would be as great a time as ever to try it. Thanks for sharing that with us.

This is gorgeous! Your grandpa would be proud, and his kids and grandkids will treasure these.

Has anyone else noticed how loving and generous quilters are?

ccbear66 08-21-2008 05:45 PM

Great job for the first time. I love the humming bird.

catchergirl01 08-22-2008 11:07 AM

Thank you all for your very kind replies. The wall hanging has been really easy to do. I am using Wonder Under to attach the pieces of clothing to the background and premade fusible bias tape. I was worried it was going to take a while to put the bias tape on, but it was done in and hour and a half.

I am using all sorts of different matterials on the quilt, but have not had any problems so far. The only problem could be when I am sewing down the bias tape, but I will just go slow.

I ordered the pattern online from The Virginia Quilter. The link is below.

Again thanks to all of you for your kind comments, they really inspire me to make the rest of the wallhangings.

My best friend passed away this week. Her favorite was the hummingbird (she had a tattoo). Her children would be so appreciative of something like this. You have given me a precious idea of something to remember her by. Thank you. I will be hunting out some of her clothing for this purpose. My condolences on your grandpa passing. Your work is beautiful.
