My DH's DGM made these 18 1/2" squares years ago. I would like to make a quilt for each of his two sons for Christmas. There are enough squares to put six in each quilt. I know that I want to turn them on point, but not sure where to go from there. One will be in the blues and the other in the greens probably ending with queen size. All suggestions will be helpful. We can call these community effort quilts. Thank you so very much. Janice

Do you have any pictures of her that you could transfer to fabric and incorporate in to the quilt?

If you put 6 18" blocks on point, 2 blocks by 3 blocks, with plain blocks as spacers, your center would be about 50" x 75" even before adding sashing. Add 2-3" sashing, a few borders, and you quickly get a bed-sized quilt. LOVE big blocks! This is a great project, honoring your husband's grandmother, putting her blocks to use (wouldn't it be reassuring to think someone would do this for our UFOs?), and creating family heirlooms. Good luck to you in doing it, and we'd love to see the final result. If you don't chose to put photo blocks on the front, consider doing it for the back, with a little history of the blocks, their maker, and if course yourself, to preserve that precious family history.

I think they would be nice if bordered with the fabrics you have, log cabin style. Or, make large log cabin blocks out of your fabric and use those for your alternate block.

I like both of the ideas posted here. My mind says I would put the 6 blocks in the middle and work out from there. I would use colored blocks, muslin blocks and the greens (or blues) for blocks. I don't always know how I am going to finish a quilt, but I would start in the middle for sure and let the Good Lord tell you what to do. It happens to me all the time. I love your colors for each quilt and please, do post the finished quilts.
