Thrift Store Find

1 Attachment(s)
I just picked this up for $3 and it has 26 layers on the bolt. I figure about 8 yds? of really nice muslin (not the thin stuff you can buy now) Other than a lot of backs for runners, what would you make with it?

Lori S 12-12-2012 10:33 AM

I use muslin as a backgound fabric in quilt squares... it gives a more antique look to a quilt. Quilting shows up wonderfully on muslin. Use for backing of quilts not just runners... when its used as a backing on a quilt.. the muslin side resembles a whole cloth quilt.

quiltingcandy 12-12-2012 10:35 AM

Wow! That was a find. You can use it for for anything you want to. You can back a quilt, use it for Cathedral Windows, Double Wedding Ring, and place at all where you need that color. How wide is it?

i agree with all of this

irishrose 12-12-2012 11:08 AM

You may have more like 13 yards if it's a normal bolt. Either way, it's a great buy.

luvTooQuilt 12-12-2012 11:13 AM

ANYTHING !!..
1930's patterns
foundation for string piecing
Backing
sashing
blocks...

Jennie and Me 12-12-2012 11:23 AM

Wow, bless your heart, what a great find! I agree with the 13 yards and immediately thought of the Cathedral Windows. Enjoy!!

sammygirlqt 12-12-2012 11:26 AM

I agree with the many uses listed above. |What a great find and do you see on the label "Made in Canada"....I bet not anymore.

QUILTNMO 12-12-2012 11:29 AM

My thoughts to!!

catladyquilts 12-12-2012 11:56 AM

If it's 26 layers on the bolt that makes it app 13 yards. figure 2 rounds on the bolt per yard - you made a wonderful find.

Jingle 12-12-2012 12:14 PM

Great find!!!! I would use it for piecing blocks and making quilt backings.

Sylvie45 12-12-2012 12:36 PM

You picked it up for $3!!! in Canada!!! wow. Lucky you. Lots of uses as the quilters are saying.

javin22 12-12-2012 12:38 PM

I also like it for background fabrics in quilts. I agree with Lori S.

DebraK 12-12-2012 01:02 PM

I wonder how it it would take dye?

Tartan 12-12-2012 01:04 PM

13 yds? Even better deal than I thought, Woopee!

Jackie Spencer 12-12-2012 08:07 PM

I love working with good muslin, so soft.

roadrunr 12-13-2012 05:42 AM

What a great buy! I often use muslin as sashings in my scrappy quilts. The quilting shows up really good on the muslin (both machine quilting and hand quilting). I'm envious of you!

maryb119 12-13-2012 06:04 AM

Great find! You can always use muslin. The roughly figure yardage, 2 wraps around a bolt is 1 yard. Hope that helps.

rebeljane 12-13-2012 06:31 AM

Here in Australia that is called unbleached calico not muslin. It looks great in a quilt with browns

Pattia 12-13-2012 06:49 AM

wow, our thrift stores never have any useful quilting fabric. I sometimes think that it dissappears at the sorting facility. What thrift store did you find this at?

Tartan 12-13-2012 06:58 AM

I have found sewing scraps before but never fabric on a bolt. It was from the St. Vincent that rarely has sewing things.

luvstoquilt 12-13-2012 08:18 AM

I agree with all of this and I also backed embroidery so the tread won't show thru...What a lucky find!

carslo 12-13-2012 08:42 AM

I bought my bolt of muslin to do Cathedral Windows but haven't started yet :)

quiltingeileen 12-13-2012 08:57 AM

Lucky you! I agree with all the ideas mentioned. You can never have enough muslin.
Eileen

topper1 12-13-2012 09:07 AM

wow........great deal

Pattia 12-13-2012 09:16 AM

thanks Tartan, we don't have a St. Vincents here. Just a VV and Salvation Army.

Geri B 12-14-2012 05:41 AM

cannot beat a good muslin and this one looks 5 star!!!!!Use it anyway you would use a printed cotton....it is the basis of all those printed fabrics!!!!!! I always use muslin on the backs of my quilted things.......as mentioned above on a bed quilt it looks like a whole cloth when reversed!!!!! Wish our thrift stores had such treasures!!!!!!

kydeb 12-14-2012 06:28 AM

Yep! Generally 2 folds equals 1 yard on a normal bolt! You got a great deal!!!! Why don't I ever run into those deals?

misseva 12-14-2012 08:10 AM

We used to call it unbleached domestic. Made lots of curtains with it. I use it for quilt tops as well as backing.

milikaa1 12-14-2012 09:03 AM

I would use them not only for backings but for blocks in your quilts a well, I think muslin looks great in a certain style quilt....

Mariposa 12-14-2012 09:11 AM

A terrific find! You'll get lots of use with that much fabric!! Perhaps use it to back embroidery blocks as previously stated, and also for foundation piecing, if you do that. Just a thought.... :)

cpower 12-14-2012 09:16 AM

Nice find! Muslin can be used for so many quilty projects! Run away with your imagination!!!

ScubaK 12-14-2012 09:40 AM

Wow!
Great Find.

I love tea dyed muslin. It makes the quilts look so antique.

paulettepoe 12-14-2012 11:09 AM

2 folds to a yard...more than 8 yards, gf. lucky you. I would use it for quilts blocks as well as backing. you can dye it if your that brave. Congratulations, lucky ducky.

MimiBug123 12-14-2012 11:10 AM

I use muslin for lots of things, including backing blocks for applique! You scored a good one this time!

MargeD 12-14-2012 11:46 AM

Lucky lady, what a steal you got. Muslin has unlimited uses, backing, background fabric, etc. Why can't I find deals like that, probably because I'm not looking in the right places.

roseirish48 12-14-2012 12:16 PM

when my oldest daughter worked for Hancocks, she told me a full bolt is like 15 yards--if you cant find a use for it, i sure can. and I know wrodpaintervs uses it for the bodies of her Dolls for Sick Kids. and she would love to have it if you cared to donate it.

justflyingin 12-14-2012 12:32 PM

Congratulations. I also thought you could just use it anywhere you want an off white.
